PRE-ORDER ALERT: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai on 4K UHD and 4K UHD SteelBook Coming to the UK 10/23
Posted Thu Sep 14, 2023 at 09:12 AM PDT by Tom LandyOn October 23, Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai starring Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in his Cannes Best Actor winning role will be getting a 4K release (4K restoration) in the UK from STUDIOCANAL. A 4K SteelBook will be available at Zavvi.
Pre-orders are now available.
Forest Whitaker (Ghost Dog) lives above the world, alongside a flock of birds, in a homemade shack on the roof of an abandoned building. Guided by the words of an ancient samurai text, Ghost Dog is a professional killer able to dissolve into the night and move through the city unnoticed. When Ghost Dog’s code is dangerously betrayed by the dysfunctional mafia family that occasionally employs him, he reacts strictly in accordance with the Way of the Samurai.
Featuring moody cinematography by the great Robby Müller (Paris, Texas), a sublime score by the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, and a host of colourful character actors (including a memorably stone-faced Henry Silva), GHOST DOG: THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI plays like a pop-culture-sampling cinematic mixtape built around a one-of-a-kind tragic hero. Described by Time Out as “very funny, insightful and highly original”, the film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and remains one of Jarmusch’s best-loved films.

Gather The Family - Fast X Speeds to 4K UHD & Blu-ray August 8th
Posted Tue Jul 25, 2023 at 06:58 AM PDT by Matthew HartmanBuckle up and get ready for some "family-friendly" action - Vin Diesel's high-octane franchise speeds onward with Fast X coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray on August 8th... after a rather lackluster global box office pull.
Speedbumps for this latest entry in the Speedy and Angry franchise hit early when Louis Leterrier was brought in to replace stand-by franchise director Justin Lin after a little more than a week into filming because of reported creative differences. Then you have the whole Vin Diesel/Dwayne Johnson beef or no beef stuff only to have Jason Momoa completely steal the show. I mean it's a heist film, there's supposed to be some thievery but a newcomer villain probably shouldn't run away as the most entertaining piece of the film. Nevertheless, the film was not well received by critics and was a bit of a box office dud barely cracking $704 million globally against a $340 million budget. But with a swift exit from theaters comes a quick turn to home video. Now after enjoying a long stretch on digital services like Vudu and iTunes, fans can gas up to add Fast X to their Blu-ray and 4K UHD collections!Fast X - Walmart Exclusive 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Fast X - Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Seriously, if the franchise doesn't end with Vin Diesel screaming "I Am FAMILY!!!!" before driving his car into a nuclear blast that launches his car back in time to give the child version of himself his first set of car keys, I'll be sad. Until the end comes, we can enjoy Fast X from the comfy cushions of our couch. For all of the gory details, check out the press release below:

Ever since their saga started on the streets of L.A.’s underground racing scene, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have overcome impossible odds to outsmart, out-nerve and outdrive every foe. Yet when the team took down a nefarious kingpin back in Brazil, they had no idea his son Dante (Jason Momoa) was watching from the shadows. More lethal than any other enemy they’ve faced, Dante now rises as a terrifying new nemesis who’s fueled by revenge and determined to shatter their family and destroy everything and everyone that Dom loves. From London and Brazil to Antarctica and Rome, new alliances are forged and old enemies resurface. But everything changes after Dom discovers his eight-year-old son is Dante’s ultimate target.BONUS FEATURES on 4K, BLU-RAYTM & DIGITAL:- THIS IS FAMILY - Family bonds are always the strongest. Criterion Unveils a Spook-Tacular October 4K and Blu-ray Slate
Posted Mon Jul 17, 2023 at 07:55 PM PDT by Tom LandyThis October, The Criterion Collection is set to release Nikyatu Jusu's Nanny and Freaks / The Unknown / The Mystic: Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers on Blu-ray, a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray upgrade of David Cronenberg's Videodrome, plus Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now as well as Alejandro Amenábar's The Others on both formats.
You can usually count on Criterion to punch out one or two horror gems for the spooky season but in recent memory Criterion's October 2023 horror-drenched slate has to be one of their most aggressively committed to the genre. There's a lot coming in so let's dive right in.
Arriving on October 3 on 4K UHD Blu-ray (and returning to Blu-ray) is Nicolas Roeg's classic Don't Look Now.
Don't Look Now - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie mesmerize as a married couple on an extended trip to Venice following a family tragedy. While in that elegantly decaying city, they have a series of inexplicable, terrifying, and increasingly dangerous experiences. A masterpiece from Nicolas Roeg, Don’t Look Now, adapted from a story by Daphne du Maurier, is a brilliantly disturbing tale of the supernatural, as renowned for its innovative editing and haunting cinematography as for its naturalistic eroticism and its unforgettable climax and denouement—one of the great endings in horror history.

Freaks / The Unknown / The Mystic: Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers - a trio of freaky silent-era features will arrive on Blu-ray on October 17.
Freaks / The Unknown / The Mystic:
Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers - The Criterion CollectionThe world is a carnival of criminality, corruption, and psychosexual strangeness in the twisted pre-Code shockers of Tod Browning. Early Hollywood’s edgiest auteur, Browning drew on his experiences as a circus performer to create subversive pulp entertainments set amid the world of traveling sideshows, which, with their air of the exotic and the disreputable, provided a pungent backdrop for his sordid tales of outcasts, cons, villains, and vagabonds. Bringing together two of his defining works (The Unknown and Freaks) and a long-unavailable rarity (The Mystic), this cabinet of pre-Code curiosities reveals a master of the morbid whose ability to unsettle is matched only by his daring compassion for society’s most downtrodden.
Freaks (1932)
The most transgressive film produced by a major American studio in the 1930s, Tod Browning’s crowning achievement has haunted the margins of cinema for nearly one hundred years. An unforgettable cast of real-life sideshow performers portray the entertainers in a traveling circus who, shunned by mainstream society, live according to their own code—one of radical acceptance for the fellow oppressed and, as the show’s beautiful but cruel trapeze artist learns, of terrifying retribution for those who cross them. Received with revulsion by viewers upon its initial release, Freaks effectively ended Browning’s career but can now be seen for what it is: an audacious cry for understanding and a singular experience of nightmarish, almost avant-garde power. The Unknown (1927)
The most celebrated and exquisitely perverse of the many collaborations between Tod Browning and his legendary leading man Lon Chaney, The Unknown features a wrenchingly physical performance from “the Man of a Thousand Faces” as the armless Spanish knife thrower Alonzo (he flings daggers with his feet) whose dastardly infatuation with his beautiful assistant (Joan Crawford)—a woman, it just so happens, who cannot bear to be touched by the hands of any man—drives him to unspeakable extremes. Sadomasochistic obsession, deception, murder, disfigurement, and a spectacular Grand Guignol climax—Browning wrings every last frisson from the lurid premise. The Mystic (1925)
A fantastically atmospheric but rarely seen missing link in the development of Tod Browning’s artistry, set amid his favored milieu of shadowy sideshows and clever criminals, The Mystic provides a striking showcase for silent-era diva Aileen Pringle, who sports a series of memorably outré looks (courtesy of art-deco designer Erté) as Zara, a phony psychic in a Hungarian carnival who, under the guidance of a Svengali-like con man (Conway Tearle), crashes—and proceeds to swindle—American high society. Browning’s fascination with the weird is on full display in the eerie séance sequences, while his subversive moral ambiguity extends surprising sympathy to even the most seemingly irredeemable of antiheroes.- New 2K digital restoration of Freaks, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
- New 2K digital reconstruction and restoration of The Unknown by the George Eastman Museum, with a new score by composer Philip Carli
- New 2K digital restoration of The Mystic, with a new score by composer Dean Hurley
- Audio commentaries on Freaks and The Unknown and an introduction to The Mystic by film scholar David J. Skal
- New interview with author Megan Abbott about director Tod Browning and pre-Code horror
- Archival documentary on Freaks
- Reading of “Spurs,” the short story by Tod Robbins on which Freaks is based
- Prologue to Freaks, which was added to the film in 1947
- Program on the alternate endings to Freaks
- Video gallery of portraits from Freaks
- English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
- PLUS: An essay by film critic Farran Smith Nehme
Hitting stores on October 24 on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray is the chilling 2001 film The Others starring Nicole Kidman.
The Others - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
A remote manor; hushed, candlelit atmosphere; and shivery, supernatural menace. With his first English-language feature, Chilean Spanish writer-director-composer Alejandro Amenábar resurrected the classic gothic chiller to create a ghost story of uncommon emotional resonance. Nicole Kidman stars as a World War II–era mother whose imperiousness masks a terrifying pain, as she keeps her light-sensitive children enshrouded in darkness on her country estate. The arrival of three new servants punctures her insular world—and seems to disturb the balance between the living and the dead. With each stunning twist and turn, Amenábar immerses us more deeply in a realm haunted not only by spirits but also by guilt, trauma, and repression.
DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
- New 4K digital restoration, approved by director Alejandro Amenábar, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack
- One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features

- PLUS: An essay by scholar Philip Horne

And finally on October 31st, Nanny - the debut feature film from Nikyatu Jusu will join The Criterion Collection on Blu-ray.
Nanny (2022) - The Criterion Collection
A spellbinding blend of social observation and artful shocks, the debut feature from Nikyatu Jusu plunges into the increasingly fractured consciousness of Aisha (Anna Diop), a Senegalese immigrant who takes a job as a nanny for a wealthy white family in New York City. Separated from her own son and casually exploited by her employers, Aisha finds herself consumed by unsettling visions and a growing rage—one that could either destroy or empower her. This visually captivating tour de force—the first horror movie to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival—distills complex ideas about motherhood, inequality, and cultural dislocation into a work of dreamlike dread.
DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
- New 4K digital master, approved by director Nikyatu Jusu, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio and uncompressed stereo soundtracks
- New program featuring Jusu, actors Anna Diop and Michelle Monaghan, and director of photography Rina Yang

Sam Peckinpah's Cross of Iron Unleashed for Blu-ray and 4K UHD SteelBook on 7/31 from Studiocanal
Posted Wed Jun 14, 2023 at 10:30 AM PDT by Tom LandySam Peckinpah's 1977 World War II classic Cross of Iron starring James Coburn, James Mason, and David Warner has received a new 4K restoration with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook, Blu-ray, and DVD available on July 31.
Based on the novel by Willi Heinrich, Sam Peckinpah’s (THE WILD BUNCH) only war film is an intense and uncompromising affair that brilliantly reflects both the futility of conflict and the director’s fascination with individuals confronted by events beyond their control.
A World War II tale told from the German perspective, CROSS OF IRON follows a platoon of German soldiers in Russia when the German Wehrmacht forces had been decimated and the Germans were retreating along the Russian front. Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) is a German corporal and recipient of the Iron Cross who has grown disenchanted with Hitler’s war machine. When Captain Stransky (Maximilian Schell) assumes charge, the pair are thrown into immediate conflict, the autocratic but ultimately cowardly Stransky coveting the loyalty and honour Steiner commands.
Evocatively shot by John Coquillon (BILLY THE KID) in sombre tones, the superlative lead performances are matched by David Warner and James Mason as war-weary senior officers. Viewed as one of Peckinpah’s most powerful works, it’s an unflinching vision of the Second World War.
Cross of Iron has been described by Orson Welles as "one of the greatest anti-war films ever made" and co-stars Maximilian Schell and Senta Berger. Studiocanal has given the 1977 classic based on the book by Will Heinrich a new 4K restoration and will also be available on DVD and digital on the same date.

Nobody can hear you scream underwater!
Tina and Ben, urban explorers from New York, explore abandoned places and buildings on their European trip. A special highlight: In the 1980s, a village in south-west France was sacrificed to the floods to prevent the region from being constantly flooded. At the bottom of the resulting lake there is said to be a villa that has been perfectly preserved ever since. What the two divers first consider a unique find turns into a nightmare. They realize the house has a cruel secret. Trapped and with dangerously low oxygen reserves, Tina and Ben ask themselves the frightening question: are we really alone in the house?
Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, the directors of INSIDE and LEATHERFACE, invite you to dive into horror. THE DEEP HOUSE haunts with a haunted, otherworldly atmosphere and an exciting new haunted house twist. (Bloody Disgusting)

Sisu Brings Bloody Carnage to Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray on July 11
Posted Tue Jun 6, 2023 at 11:23 AM PDT by Tom LandyWriter and director Jalmari Helander's old-school action film about a lone minor defending his gold from a horde of Nazis arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and on-demand on July 11. Best Buy will also have an exclusive 4K SteelBook.
Read our review for Sisu here.
During WWII, a solitary prospector crosses paths with Nazis in northern Finland. When the Nazis steal his gold, they quickly discover he is no ordinary miner. While there is no direct translation for the Finnish word “sisu,” the legendary ex-commando will embody what it means: a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. And this one-man death squad will go to outrageous lengths to get his gold back — even if it means killing every last Nazi in his path.
Sisu - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (SteelBook)
No word if Dolby Vision will be included in the 4K UHD Blu-ray, and both discs seem to be absent Atmos. The following bonus features are included:
- Indestructible: Making Sisu
- Pushing the Boundaries of Reality: The Visual Effects of Sisu

Wahoooo It's A-Meee, The Super Mario Bros. Movie on 4K UHD and Blu-ray June 13th - or Today!
Posted Tue Jun 6, 2023 at 06:01 AM PDT by Matthew HartmanUniversal Pictures Home Entertainment finally makes The Super Mario Bros. The Movie official for Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on June 13th - even though multiple retailers have already shelved their stock.
One of the biggest box office successes of 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie finally comes home to physical media. While Universal was incredibly slow getting an official release date out, retailers more or less had to take a stab in the dark when they could shelve their product. So Universal's press release indicates next Tuesday, June 13th as the official release date, stores like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy broke street date over the weekend - and it looks like product is still on shelves. So grab your power-up star and run over all those other collectors out there and grab a copy!
The movie tells the story of two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario, the brave one with the “let’s-a go” attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi, who would prefer to go nowhere. We open with the Super Mario Brothers reckoning with their struggling plumbing business, and wind up in a whirlwind adventure through Mushroom Kingdom. Through their journey, we meet a cast of familiar, lovable characters, ultimately uniting to defeat the power-hungry villain, Bowser. The Super Mario Bros. Movie takes what millions of gamers worldwide have loved for over three decades and levels it up to a new and breathtaking cinematic experience.
