Anthony Harvey's The Lion in Winter Joins StudioCanal Vintage Classics with 4K UHD and Blu-ray Releases 02/17
Posted Mon Dec 16, 2024 at 07:53 AM PST by Tom LandyAnthony Harvey's classic film The Lion in Winter starring Peter O’toole, Katharine Hepburn, and the silver screen debuts of both Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton is coming to 4K UHD and Blu-ray as part of StudioCanal's Vintage Classics collection on February 17.

The new 4K UHD and Blu-ray releases will also feature new bonus material including an interview with Anthony Hopkins.
England, the 12th Century, after the death of his son and heir, King Henry II (Peter O’Toole) is obsessed with finding a new successor, so summons his three remaining sons. As the Royal couple scheme and cajole with their sons, their passions turn from tenderness to fury as they try to determine who should be the future King of England.
The Lion in Winter - StudioCanal Vintage Classics 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
ABOUT THE RESTORATION:
THE LION IN WINTER was scanned at 4K resolution on an Arriscan Classic Film Scanner. The restoration and colour grading were carried out at Filmfinity Productions, London. Two copies of film reels formed the sources for the restoration. The original 35mm camera negative was not in good condition; fluid marks e damaged most of the footage. The other source was the Inter Positive, which is in good condition. Comparing the two copies, the best source for each shot was determined. Digital restoration specialists used image processing tools to remove many thousands of instances of dirt, eliminate scratches, mould, film joins, flicker, and other imperfections. This restoration was particularly challenging because of a high number of tramline scratches that need to be repaired. The 2024 restoration of The Lion in Winter was carried out in 4K HDR (Dolby Vision) and managed by Mariana Ledesma and Jahanzeb Hayat for Studiocanal

Fresh from the Top End - Turbine Unveils Worldwide Debut of Greg McLean's Ozploitation Classic 'Wolf Creek' on 4K UHD Mediabook on 12/12
Posted Thu Dec 5, 2024 at 05:32 AM PST by Matthew HartmanThe brutal Terror Films from the early 2000s are going through something of a critical reassessment. One of those classics is Greg McLean's unflinching, incredibly disturbing Wolf Creek. Now thanks to Germany's boutique label Turbine, fans can choose from four Mediabook options to own the film's Unrated/Uncut version on 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio.
Just when you thought you've reviewed a film and had something of a definitive edition, twice even, along comes another release. It's a truism for the physical media landscape these days. After Australia's Viavision dropped their excellent lenticular cover limited edition and Bloody Disgusting and Walmart dropped their Blu-ray SteelBook from Lionsgate, Turbine is getting in on the action with their new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of Greg McLean's brutal Ozploitation Terror Film Wolf Creek. Since the film was shot on a mix of early 1080p digital, 16mm, and some 35mm footage, it'll be interesting to see how this turns out. But, we'll get to enjoy this director-approved 4K master with Dolby Vision HDR and Atmos audio!

Aldo Lado’s Debut Feature 'Short Night of Glass Dolls' Arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in April 2025
Posted Tue Dec 3, 2024 at 02:45 PM PST by Tom LandyCelluloid Dreams is bringing Aldo Lado’s 1971 film, Short Night of Glass Dolls to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray + Blu-ray on April 29, 2025.
For the first time in stunning 4K ultra-high resolution, this 4-disc 4K UHD and Blu-ray Collector’s Edition features a brand new, fully restored 4K transfer of the movie from the original camera negatives, as well as a 35mm Grindhouse version of the movie. It comes in a high-quality, side-loaded slipcase that contains a disc case with reversible cover sleeve featuring the English and the original Italian title of the movie, as well as a 64-page booklet.
Short Night of Glass Dolls - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
From the fringes of the giallo genre, writer and director Aldo Lado (WHO SAW HER DIE?, NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS) delivers a debut movie that pushes the boundaries of convention with “an ending that is one of the best, truly shocking giallo finales ever put on film.” (Collider)
American foreign correspondent Gregory Moore is on his final assignment in Prague before transitioning to London. He plans to bring his beautiful Czech girlfriend Myra with him, freeing her from the shackles of oppressive Iron Curtain politics. But their plans are suddenly derailed when Myra vanishes without a trace.
His investigation into her disappearance makes him realize that decadence, superstition, and hunger for power run deep in the City of a Hundred Spires.
And then his own body turns up in a park…
With no sign of life or rigor mortis, doctors prepare to perform an autopsy to discover the cause of his mysterious and symptomless death. What they don’t know is that in his mind, Greg is frantic. Silently screaming. “I am alive!”
Newly restored and presented in 4K ultra-high resolution for the first time, “Short Night of Glass Dolls” is “easily one of the most intelligent and stylish gialli” (The Celluloid Highway). The film will surprise you with its remarkable narrative, distinctive photography, and stellar cast that includes Jean Sorel (A LIZARD IN A WOMAN’S SKIN, THE SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH), Barbara Bach (THE BLACK BELLY OF THE TARANTULA, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME), Ingrid Thulin (THE SILENCE, WILD STRAWBERRIES) and Mario Adorf (THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS?).
Celluloid Dreams is proud to present this newly scanned version, restored in 4K from the original camera negative, along with countless extras, in a high-quality, side-loaded slipcase that also contains a 64-page booklet. Note that this release does

A Certain Killer/A Killer's Key - Arrow Limited Edition
Anticipating the cool aesthetic of Seijun Suzuki’s Branded to Kill and based on a crime novel by Shinji Fujiwara, the author of the original material for the same year’s A Colt is My Passport, A Certain Killer and A Killer’s Key are similarly stylish contemporary hitman thrillers directed by Daiei’s top director of jidai-geki, Kazuo Mori (The Tale of Zatoichi Continues) and starring the studio’s top actor Raiz? Ichikawa (Shinobi: Band of Assassins, Sleepy Eyes of Death).
In A Certain Killer, Shiozaki’s low-profile existence as a chef at a local sushi restaurant serves as a front for his true job as a professional assassin whose modus operandi is poisoned needles. He’s approached by Maeda, a low-ranking member of a local yakuza group, to take out a rival gang boss. But the sudden arrival into his life of a spirited young woman, Keiko (Yumiko Nogawa, Gate of Flesh), has dramatic ramifications on his relationship with his new employer. Ichikawa’s lone wolf assassin is back in A Killer’s Key, this time masquerading as a traditional dance instructor named Nitta who is called in to avert a potential financial scandal that threatens to engulf a powerful yakuza group with ties to powerful figures in the political establishment.
Co-scripted by the director Yasuz? Masumura (Giants and Toys, Blind Beast) and featuring masterful scope cinematography with an expressionistic eye for colour by one of Japan’s most esteemed cinematographers, Kazuo Miyagawa (Rashomon, Ugetsu), these Japanese crime drama essentials are presented for the very first time to the English-language home video market.

Alice, Sweet Alice - Arrow Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
A young Brooke Shields meets an untimely end in this religious-themed proto slasher par excellence from director Alfred Sole.
On the day of her first communion, young Karen (Brooke Shields) is savagely murdered by an unknown assailant in a yellow rain mac and creepy translucent mask. But the nightmare is far from over – as the knife-wielding maniac strikes again and again, Karen’s bereaved parents are forced to confront the possibility that Karen’s wayward sister Alice might be the one behind the mask.
Bearing influences from the likes of Hitchcock, the then-booming Italian giallo film and more specifically, Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now, Alice, Sweet Alice is an absolutely essential – if often overlooked – entry in the canon of 1970s American horror.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 - Arrow UK Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
In 1974, Tobe Hooper changed the face of horror with his landmark ?lm The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Though the hulking Leatherface left an indelible mark upon the cinematic landscape, it wouldn’t be until 1986 that the buzz came back… in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2!
Relocating the cannibalistic Sawyers to a cavernous labyrinth beneath an amusement park, Hooper’s deliciously demented sequel sees local DJ Stretch running afoul of them when she gets mixed up in the brutal slaying of two youngsters. Meanwhile, Lieutenant “Lefty” Enright is hell-bent on avenging the murder of his nephew Franklin, who perished in the original massacre.

The Last Stop in Yuma County - Arrow UK Limited Edition
NEVER BRING A KNIFE SALESMAN TO A GUNFIGHT
Blending elements of the western and neo-noir, The Last Stop in Yuma County is a loving and expertly crafted homage to the spirit of 1970s American crime thrillers with a modern twist, winning the prize for Best Film at the Sitges International Film Festival.
A travelling knife salesman impatiently awaits the arrival of a fuel truck in an isolated roadside diner in rural Arizona. His attempt to wile away the hours with a crossword puzzle and a cup of coffee is interrupted by the arrival of Travis and Beau, two bank robbers fleeing from a heist. Realising they’ve been recognised, the thieves intimidate the diner’s staff and clientele into silence just as more oblivious patrons begin to trickle in. As the tension mounts and pressure spirals, the salesman is caught between protecting the safety of the other customers and his own survival, and will make a decision that will change his life forever.
Featuring gripping performances by a cast loaded with genre favourites, including Jim Cummings (The Beta Test), Richard Brake (Barbarian), Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), Jocelin Donahue (The House of the Devil) and Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes), The Last Stop in Yuma County is a thrilling exploration of the difficult choices and fragile alliances that arise in desperate situations.

IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE, THE TERROR BEGINS
When a space shuttle crew finds a mysterious spacecraft containing three human-looking creatures in a state of suspended animation, they bring them back to Earth for further investigation.
It’s only then that scientists discover that they are in fact a race of space vampires that feed off people’s life-force, rather than their blood. So when they escape and run amok in London, the consequences are apocalyptic – and the shuttle crew’s only survivor (Steve Railsback) seems to be the only man who can stop them.
Based on Colin Wilson’s novel The Space Vampires, with a screenplay co-written by Dan O’Bannon (Alien, Return of the Living Dead) and directed by Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Poltergeist), this lively sci-fi horror romp has a stellar cast including Peter Firth, Frank Finlay and Patrick Stewart – although it’s Mathilda May’s appearance as the seductive alien leader that attracts the most attention to this day.

What's Up With That? Sony Celebrates 35 Years of Nothing with Seinfeld on 4K UHD & Blu-ray December 17th - but there's a catch!
Posted Wed Oct 30, 2024 at 10:10 AM PDT by Matthew HartmanWho would have imagined a show about nothing featuring some of the worst characters imaginable lasting ten seasons let alone remaining the cultural phenomenon it is today? Concluding their incredible 100th Anniversary of Columbia Pictures, they're tipping their hat to the 35th Anniversary of Seinfeld with 4K UHD and Blu-ray disc releases.
So this news got brewing early this morning when we received a ton of messages from fans concerning the 4K listing on Amazon. Before I even had my first of my daily dozen cups of Columbia's best export, I was fielding questions about whether I knew this or knew that, yadda, yadda, blah, blah-blah, blah. Now with incredible grace, Sony has finally given us complete details for their 4K UHD and Blu-ray sets dated to drop December 17th.With great relief, I am pleased to report that Seinfeld: The Complete Series - 4K UHD will be delivered pressed on 24 discs presented in its original 1.33:1 broadcast aspect ratio (THANK YOU SANTA!) with HDR10, and DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio!
Seinfeld: The Complete Series - 4K UHD
Now here's where things get stranger...
When it comes to the 1080p counterpart, Seinfeld: The Complete Series - Blu-ray will be presented in the horribly cropped 1.78:1 versions we've seen on streaming spread over 24 discs and offering DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio.
Seinfeld: The Complete Series - Blu-ray
Why is it the 4K gets the proper aspect ratio and the Blu-ray gets the ugly cropped version? What's up with that?
Truthfully I don't know beyond the speculation that the 1080p masters were ready to go and they wouldn't have to reauthor anything in the lower resolution after the new 4K scans. The other eye line I can see is that Sony views 4K UHD as the niche preservationist format that it is and is catering to please the people willing to payout about $100 more for the set than standard Blu-ray. Mind you that's just a guess.
Beyond aspect ratio differences, both sets look to have the same extra features - which weren't detailed in the PR so I have to assume they're the same archival materials assembled for the DVDs.
So, grab your fork, knife, and favorite candy bar and get those pre-orders in!
Here's the full press release for your edification:

Director Sam Raimi combined the spooky underpinnings of his early work with his newly proven talent for handling powerful drama in the supernatural thriller The Gift, coaxing nuanced performances from a star-studded cast to bring a gripping script by Billy Bob Thornton & Tom Epperson (One False Move) to life.
In rural Georgia, recently widowed psychic Annie Wilson (Cate Blanchett) works as a tarot reader to support her young family. When she is introduced to her son's affable school principal (Greg Kinnear) and his socialite fiancée (Katie Holmes), Annie has a grisly premonition of things yet to come. After her violent vision comes true, all eyes turn to Annie, leaving her with no choice but to use her clairvoyant abilities to find the culprit herself. Could it be the abusive husband (Keanu Reeves) of one of Annie's regular clients (Hilary Swank)? Or the nervy mechanic (Giovanni Ribisi) whose yearning for friendship masks an uncontrollable rage? Or is another terrible secret hiding in plain sight?
Made right before a certain web-slinger finally catapulted Raimi from the cult fringes onto Hollywood's A-list, The Gift is an underappreciated but vital entry in his filmography that is ripe for reappraisal with this brand new 4K remaster.

The Usual Suspects - 4K UHD Arrow UK Limited Edition
The Usual Suspects - Arrow UK Limited Edition Blu-ray also available.
Amidst the wave of neo-noir thrillers that swept American cinema in the 1990s, few films made as much impact as The Usual Suspects, which revolutionized the genre, won two Academy Awards® and is still regarded as one of the greatest crime films ever made.
After a brutal massacre on a cargo ship off the coast of Los Angeles leaves 27 men dead, Special Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) interrogates one of the only two survivors, small-time con artist Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey). During the interview, Kint tells Kujan of how he was recruited by the fearsome crime lord Keyser Söze to commit a series of daring heists with four other crooked misfits: Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), Mike McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Fred Fenster (Benicio del Toro) and Todd Hockey (Kevin Pollak). But as Kint's account of the events leading up to the massacre becomes more convoluted, Kujan becomes increasingly skeptical and determined to discover the identity of the elusive Keyser Söze.
With an unforgettably twisty and tightly written Oscar®-winning script by Christopher McQuarrie, The Usual Suspects is an unmissable entry in the canon of American indie cinema.

Incubus (1966) - 4K UHD Arrow Limited Edition
Incubus (1966) - Arrow Limited Edition Blu-ray also available
It is often said that films about the Devil are cursed with bad luck, but Leslie Stevens' Incubus might be the most cursed of them all. By the time it premiered in 1966, two of its stars had tragically taken their own lives; the eccentric director's insistence on filming in the obscure Esperanto language ensured it failed to receive any distribution; and it was nearly lost forever when the original elements were believed lost in a fire. Decades passed until it was finally saved and unveiled to the public in all its unholy glory!
Wounded in battle, soldier Marc (William Shatner, just prior to being cast in Star Trek) ventures to the remote village of Nomen Tuum to find a well where the waters are said to be blessed with healing powers. Little does he suspect that the inhabitants of Nomen Tuum are demonic seductresses who entice interlopers and lead them to damnation, and one such succubus, Kia (Allyson Ames) has her sights on Marc. As an eclipse shrouds the sun and darkness falls over the village, Marc and Kia's relationship becomes more passionate… will his soul survive?
Now restored in 4K from the last known surviving 35mm print, this eerie and unforgettable American folk horror from the creator of The Outer Limits survives to chill a new generation as never seen before. Stylishly filmed in Big Sur and other California locations by cinematographer (and future Academy Award winner) Conrad L. Hall, Incubus is a film unlike any other, now accompanied by hours of bonus features delving into the mysteries of this once-thought-lost cult classic.

Rampo Noir - Arrow Limited Edition
Four filmmakers from completely different backgrounds bring their radically personal takes to the stories of Japan's celebrated master of the macabre, Edogawa Rampo (Horrors of Malformed Men, Blind Beast).
In "Mars's Canal", by music video director and visual artist Suguru Takeuchi, a lone man encounters the other side of his psyche beyond the reflective surface of a circular pond set in a desolate landscape. Japanese New Wave auteur and longtime director of the Ultraman series Akio Jissoji (This Transient Life, Mandala) harnesses his distinctive stylistic sheen in his story of a mad mirror maker, "Mirror Hell". "Caterpillar" sees the singular vision of cult director Hisayasu Sato (The Bedroom, Naked Blood) at its most grotesque, in his portrait of a wounded war veteran who returns from the frontline as little more than a bloody torso, helpless to defend himself against the increasingly perverted caprices of an embittered wife. Finally, a famous actor is subjected to the obsessive attentions of her limo driver in "Crawling Bugs", the directorial debut of internationally acclaimed manga artist Atsushi Kaneko (Bambi and Her Pink Gun).
Produced by the same team behind Ichi the Killer and Uzumaki, and with a cast featuring some of Japan's top stars, including Tadanobu Asano (Maboroshi, Silence) and Ryuhei Matsuda (Blue Spring, Gohatto), Rampo Noir is a stylistic tour-de-force that vividly evokes the "erotic grotesque" worlds created by Japan's pioneering proponent of horror and mystery fiction.
Special Features and Technical Specs:- Original lossless Japanese stereo audio
- Optional newly translated English subtitles
- Brand new audio commentary by Japanese film experts Jasper Sharp and Alexander Zahlten
- Another World, a new interview with Suguru Takeuchi, director of "Mars's Canal"

'Joker: Folie À Deux' Warbles to 4K UHD & Blu-ray Disc December 17th - Streaming October 29th

After a blistering hit from critics and fans and a box office take to match, Joker: Folie À Deux will sprint onto theater-at-home streaming on October 29th with 4K UHD & Blu-ray discs dropping in time for Christmas.
Ouch, that's a painfully quick turnaround. In case you didn't notice, the coverage of the jukebox musical sequel Joker: Folie À Deux hasn't exactly been kind. In fact, it's been pretty damn brutal. Ever since the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, this sequel from Todd Phillips starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the good news has been about as scarce as positive reviews. Now with the studio blame game train under a full head of steam, Joker: Folie À Deux will sneak its way onto digital retail platforms on October 29th with 4K and Blu-ray discs dropping down the chimney on December 17th in time for a very merry Christmas.
Joker: Folie À Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him.
