Funny Girl - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Witness the birth of a movie star as Barbra Streisand makes a screen debut for the ages in this musical spectacular. From humor to pathos, she hits every note as popular 1920s singer-comedian Fanny Brice, a young Jewish New Yorker whose spirit and supernova talent propel her to fame in the Ziegfeld Follies, but whose devotion to an unreliable gambler (a charismatic Omar Sharif) brings drama and heartbreak into her life. Adapted from a hit Broadway show and directed by Hollywood master William Wyler, Funny Girl hits emotional highs in unforgettable performances of songs like “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade”—moments that won Streisand one of the most richly deserved Best Actress awards in Oscar history.

Paper Moon - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Paper Moon - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Maverick director Peter Bogdanovich affectionately recreates the world of the 1930s Dust Bowl in this beloved, briskly entertaining chronicle of one of cinema’s unlikeliest crime sprees. Real-life father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O’Neal (who became the youngest-ever Oscar winner for her spark-plug performance) play off each other with almost musical agility as a Bible-hawking con man and the precocious, recently orphaned tomboy who falls into his care—and soon rivals her newfound father figure’s skill as a swindler. With period-perfect detail, glowing monochrome imagery by cinematographer László Kovács, and a memorable supporting cast (including the inimitable Madeline Kahn), Paper Moon is a witty, loving portrait of two natural-born hustlers on a road trip through Depression-era America.

    4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

Scarface - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Scarface - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Blazing across the screen in a spray of bullets, the gangster-film sensation Scarface helped set the standard for the genre for decades to come. Swaggering, scary, and unexpectedly charming, Paul Muni gives an iconic portrayal of criminal sociopathy as Tony Camonte, the ruthless, machine-gun-toting mobster who rises through the ranks of a bootlegging empire atop an ever-increasing body count, but whose possessive relationship with his wild-child sister (Ann Dvorak) threatens to be his undoing. With rat-a-tat command of editing and dialogue, and his trademark panache, director Howard Hawks creates an unstoppable sense of dynamism while pushing on-screen violence to new heights of brutality.

    4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

    • New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack

Cinema’s great modern mythmaker Guillermo del Toro uses the hallmarks of classic horror and fantasy to tell a strange and sublime fable about outsiderhood, connection, and love’s transcendence. A triumph of visual imagination that combines elements of sci-fi, noir, and the golden-age musical, this swooning cinematic dreamscape—winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director—is a monster movie with a human heart.

    Creature with the Blue Hand

A pair of creepy Klaus Kinski classics will be available in a special collector's edition Blu-ray on October 22 from Film Masters. The films included are Creature With the Blue Hand (1967) and Web of the Spider (1971).

Creature With the Blue Hand (1967) - Originally released in Germany as Die Blaue Hand, the film was bought by Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and released in the U.S. in 1967 as the alternate version, Creature With the Blue Hand. This release is presented for the first time on Blu-ray in North America. A mystery-thriller about a series of grisly murders. It's one of several German films based on the novels of Edgar Wallace, many adaptations of which starred Kinski. Directed by Alfred Vohrer, the film also stars Harald Leipnitz and Carl Lange.

The film follows an inmate (Kinski) who is being held at a questionable sanitarium. When the inmate escapes and a series of murders occur, signs point to him as the killer ... but is he? Based on the novel, The Blue Hand, by Edgar Wallace, Creature With the Blue Hand is a suspenseful ride with many gothic elements and complex plot twists. Labeled as a “Krimi” film, this is a classic example of the genre, combining elements of mystery, crime and horror.

The film was later acquired by Independent International Pictures and released to home video in the U.S. as The Bloody Dead in 1987 with six minutes of new footage, shot specifically for the release. The extra footage is included in this special edition as a bonus feature, which also includes a HD version of the full film, The Bloody Dead.

Web of the Spider (1971) - A classic haunted house tale from Italian maestro, Antonio Margheriti, with Kinski as none other than Edgar Allan Poe! It's a diabolical double dose from one of cinema's most controversial and unique figures!

In the film, American writer Alan Foster is challenged to spend the night in a haunted castle by Edgar Allan Poe and his friend, Lord Blackwood. Foster, intrigued and eager for new inspiration for his writing, accepts the challenge. Once inside the supposedly deserted castle, Foster encounters many intriguing characters including the beautiful Elisabeth Blackwood. Foster and Elizabeth fall in love, but things are complicated when Elizabeth reveals that she may not be entirely alive. In a series of increasingly supernatural events, Foster learns about the tragic and sinister history of the castle and its former inhabitants. As the night progresses, the line between reality and the supernatural blurs.

Web of the Spider also stars Anthony Franciosa and Michèle Mercier and is a remake of director Margheriti's earlier film, Castle of Blood (1964). This version of Web of the Spider is the 92-minute U.S. version of the original Italian version of Nella Stretta Morsa del Ragno.controversial and unique figures!

The Blu-ray double feature comes with a newly restored 4K scan of the original 35mm archival film elements and special features will include: New 4K transfer of The Bloody Dead, the alternate version of Creature with the Blue Hand; Ballyhoo Motion Pictures presents two new documentaries, A Man Of Mystery: Inside the World of Edgar Wallace and Kinski Krimis: Inside the Rialto Film Adaptations; authors and film historians Stephen Jones and Kim Newman join forces for full commentary tracks for Creature With the Blue Hand (liner notes by Nick Clark) and Web of the Spider (liner notes by Christopher Stewardson); Samuel M. Chris finds a tattered scarecrow amongst the cornfields of her new home and tells the effigy her secret; the real reason she has come to this small town. Soon after, a mysterious figure begins to roam the fields of their new home… stalking them or protecting them from unknown threats?

The special features for both the 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions include a new 2023 Dark Night of the Scarecrows Triple Fan commentary track, hosted by Heath Holland (Cereal at Midnight podcaster) and featuring Robert Kelly, a noted film historian, and super-fan Amanda Reyes, an expert on TV movies, author, and podcaster; the original Dark Night of the Scarecrow commentary track with writer J.D. Feigelson and director Frank DeFelitta; a new 2023 Dark Night of the Scarecrow commentary by J.D. Feigelson; “Bubba Didn’t Do It: 30 Years of the Scarecrow” by Daniel Griffith; Dark Night of the Scarecrows cast reunion Q&A recorded at the 2011 Frightfest Film Festival; 1981 CBS World Premiere broadcast Promo; 1985 CBS Network re-broadcast promo; and a photo gallery – Behind the Scenes.

  • 'Inside Out 2' Brings Joy to Blu-ray and 4K UHD Limited Edition SteelBook on September 10

Inside Out 2 - Blu-ray 4K UHD SteelBook Physical Media

The Disney/Pixar animated comedy sequel Inside Out 2 will be getting a Blu-ray and 4K UHD Collectible SteelBook on September 10. Digital will arrive on August 20.

Pixar's top-grossing box office smash of all time worldwide has been hailed by critics as “absolute perfection, hilarious” (Jazz Tangcay, Variety) and “an unforgettable experience” (Landon Johnson, Awards Watch) and the home video release is packed with exclusive content featuring an all-new documentary, an alternative opening, deleted scenes and much more.

Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone. Maya Hawke lends her voice to Anxiety, alongside Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust. Directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen.

    Inside Out 2 - Blu-ray

    Inside Out 2

    Bonus Features

    • New Emotions – With Riley's imminent puberty, the story of Inside Out 2 always suggested that there would be a party of new emotions complicating Riley's world—and throwing a wrench into Joy's hard-won stability. But exactly what those new emotions could be was a big question mark. Casting the new emotions in Riley’s mind was a fun exploration into the shifting mindset of a teenager, and was also informed by some of the discarded scenes and characters from the original film. In this documentary we’ll discuss that process of creating Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy—from narrowing them down from a long list of possible emotions, to the design, animation, and voicing of these new, hilarious, and strangely recognizable characters.
    • Unlocking the Vault – In a kind of visual commentary, a group of central creatives watch and discuss the scene “The Vault.” As they stop and start—and refer to various IP versions of the scene—we’ll hear about the inspiration for Riley’s repressed memories like Bloofy and Lance Slashblade, the development of the scene in Story, and the technical challenges of creating 2D characters that exist in the CG world of Riley’s mind.
    • Deleted Scenes
      • Cold Open – In this alternate opening, a now 13-year-old Riley awkwardly fumbles her way through an original song she wrote for a school audition.
      • Broken Joy – After momentarily being unable to drive the console, Joy worries that she might be starting to malfunction.
      • Pool Party – After Riley tries too hard to be fun at an older teen’s party – resulting in utter embarrassment – her “Anxiety” becomes “Self-Loathing” who then ousts our hero emotions from headquarters.
      • Puberty Park – After seeing their faces printed on “wanted posters,” Joy and the others rogue emotions race through a puberty-themed amusement park while being chased by mind worker cops.
      • Shame Spiral – At a lock-in with some cool, older girls, Riley and friends play a game of “Never Have I Ever” that goes a bit too far – wreaking havoc in Riley’s mind.

Pre-orders for Inside Out 2 should be available soon and included below is the press announcement:

    Kinds of Kindness

Searchlight Pictures is set to release Yorgos Lanthimos' latest comedy/fantasy Kinds of Kindness starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alywn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer on Blu-ray on October 8. Digital will be available on August 27.

The "boundary-pushing twisted film" will include an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette and a pair of deleted scenes. Only the digital 4K will have Dolby Atmos and there doesn't seem to be a 4K UHD physical release at this time.

Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life, a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person, and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.

Addams Family Values Zodiak - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Paramount Scares Preorders

Not officially official yet, we haven't had the press releases come in, but Amazon and every other online retailer has it up for preorder! Paramount will be releasing Zodiac (2007) and Addams Family Values (1993) on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on October 29th.

We've heard these were in the works for some time so it's nice to see some real confirmation and a release date! At least for now, that's the release date. At any time, even today, Paramount could drop a pair of press releases on us and we'll have to scoot back here and update everything. But until then consider these on the mark - also worth noting is the "Paramount Scares" logo on the top of the spines... and also interesting that they were not included in the Paramount Scares Vol. 2 box set... could there be some mystery discs in that set after all?

    Zodiac - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

    Zodiac - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Based on the true story of the notorious serial killer and the intense manhunt he inspired, Zodiac is a superbly crafted thriller form the director of Se7en and Panic Room. Featuring an outstanding ensemble cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Chloë Sevigny, Zodiac is a searing and singularly haunting examination of twin obsessions: one man's desire to kill and another's quest for the truth.

Addams Family Values - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Addams Family Values - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

It's love at first fright when Gomez (Raul Julia) and Morticia (Anjelica Huston) welcome a new addition to the Addams household -- Pubert, their soft, cuddly, mustachioed baby boy. As Fester (Christopher Lloyd) falls hard for voluptuous nanny Debbie Jilinksy (Joan Cusack), Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) discover she's a black-widow murderess who plans to add Fester to her collection of dead husbands. The family's future grows even bleaker when the no-good nanny marries Fester and has the kids shipped off to summer camp. But Wednesday still has a Thing or two up her sleeve... With gags and ghouls galore, Addams Family Values is "screamingly funny!" (Jeff Craig, Sixty Second Preview).

UPDATE: 8/12/24 - We now know some more details about the bonus features:

    • NEW! Commentary by director Barry Sonnenfeld and screenwriter Paul Rudnick— The writer and director of ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES reunite to watch their beloved comedy and provide new insight on the production and the film’s continuing legacy.
    • NEW! Creating Family Values— The Paramount Archives digs up a collection of insightful behind-the-scenes images and interviews shot during the production of ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES—including director Barry Sonnenfeld, screenwriter Paul Rudnick, and stars Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, and Joan Cusack.

And now it's coming back to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray again! In just one week from now, you can add another copy of Collateral to your 4K collection - or if you never bought it before - with a snazzy SteelBook case.

    Paramount Scares Vol. 2 - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Paramount is set to release the second volume in their 4K UHD 'Paramount Scares' collection line. Like the past set, we're getting four flicks on 4K UHD (three for the very first time) along with some slick swag items and another badass Fangoria mag.

While some out there may lament another "box set" collection of titles, this set offers up a something for horror fans of all types. We get a slasher classic, a road thriller, the vastly better unrated version of a big-budget zombie epic, and the latest chapter in a particularly creepy franchise. All in 4K for the first time.... well three for the first time anyway.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART II Synopsis
Five years after the massacre at Camp Crystal Lake, the nerve-wracking legend of Jason Voorhees and his diabolical mother lives on. Despite ominous warnings from the locals to stay away from “Camp Blood,” a group of counselors at a nearby summer camp decide to explore the area where seven people were brutally slaughtered. All too soon, they encounter horrors of their own and the killing begins again.

    BREAKDOWN Synopsis
Jeff Taylor (Kurt Russell) and his wife Amy (Kathleen Quinlan) are headed toward a new life in California when their car’s engine dies on a remote highway. Amy accepts a ride from a helpful trucker (J.T. Walsh) while Jeff waits with the car. But when Jeff shows up at the agreed rendezvous, he finds his wife isn’t there. The locals aren’t talking; the police aren’t much help. With no one to turn to, Jeff battles his worst fears and begins a desperate, danger-ridden search to find Amy before it’s too late.

    WORLD WAR Z (Unrated) Synopsis
In this fast-paced, pulse-pounding action epic, former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) is in a race against time to save both his family and the world from a pandemic that is toppling governments and threatening to destroy humanity itself. UPDATE - only the PG-13 Version is in 4K UHD, the Unrated Cut is still a 1080p exclusive sadly.

    ORPHAN: FIRST KILL Synopsis
Esther’s terrifying saga continues in this thrilling prequel to the original and shocking horror hit ORPHAN. After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. But an unexpected twist arises that pits her against a mother who will protect her family from the murderous “child” at any cost.

Arrow Video October 2024 4K UHD and Blu-ray Releases

The closer we get to October, the more studios and independent labels unleash the terrors of their horror archives! Arrow Video is the latest to deliver their slate of spooky tales on 4K UHD and Blu-ray. Some of these have appeared on either side of the Atlantic already, but we get a couple of new releases of old favorites to devour!

Given the wonderfully messy world of international rights issues, Arrow's October 2024 slate of discs is a mix of titles that have been released on one side of the Atlantic or the other. But now they're going to be available in both parts of the world which is great (if you didn't already import some of these). But then we're also getting a couple of first-time heavy hitters for our collections. So let's get to it.
