• Ho Ho Whoa - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Jan 22, 2023

As I have mentioned several times recently, physical media is still running strong. OCN media mentions a bright future as well, do check out the article. Again, as long as the demand (purchases) are there, physical media will continue to be around. And as mentioned, if you make your purchases via our links, it helps keep this little operation running that much longer.

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 34 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of January 22nd - January 28th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases

Another week of no actual New Releases, but that is OK, there are so many catalog titles to catch up with, we can roll with them!

First from LionsGate, chances are if you liked Juice, you will like Belly. This one is being offered up as a standard edition and as a Best Buy Exclusive Slipcover SteelBook.

From Kino Lorber, the film that spawned several sequels as well as many copycats, Death Wish debuts to 4K disc. After Vinegar Syndrome had released the first sequel, a lot of us were hoping to get the original.

Next, from Shout Factory, Vince Vaughn's comedy Freaky. I will hold back on my Blumhouse lack of 4K rants (*cough* M3GAN).

Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge may or may not be out this Tuesday, there is a question about the release date.

Next week, criminal activity that hasn't happened yet, a dead remake, the original .IT task, a famous Swayze film and more.

    Blu-ray releases-

There are no blu-ray counterparts of the above titles getting shiny new releases this week. Let's take a look at the highlights of what is coming out though.

TV on disc this week only includes City on a Hill: The Complete Series from Showtime Entertainment.

New release from Universal Pictures, Violent Night. This one stars 'Hopper' from Stranger Things.

The next Vestron Video Collector's Series release (via LionsGate) The Dentist Collection comes to blu-ray this week. From the Lionsgate label, this one is peculiar, it's a thriller that appears to be packaged in a DVD case, titled Mindcage. Not sure what the idea is behind that, are DVD cases cheaper? Also look for Rock Dog 3: Battle the Beat, an animated film.

From the Warner Archive Collection, a trio of drama/romance releases, Goodbye, Mr. Chips and The Long, Long Trailer and Wife vs. Secretary.

Anime highlights include I'm Quitting Heroing - Complete Collection, Inu-Oh, Lupin the 3rd Part 6 and The Stranger by the Shore - Movie [Limited Edition].

From the Shout Select label, The Jackie Chan Collection: Volume 1 (1976 - 1982). This title implies there will be a volume 2, especially if volume 1 garners enough interest.

Single title from Criterion this week with This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection.

There's a pair of MVD Rewind Collection releases this week, The Last American Virgin and Men at Work.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Criterion has announced their april slate. Short and sweet, but do check it out! I think you may know a few of these titles.

Amazon has listed The Core for 4K release on March 14th. The newest Paramount Presents 4K title will be Wes Craven's Red Eye with a March 21 street date. Devotion is getting a 4K and blu-ray release on February 28th. Lastly, file this one under hard rumor, according to The Bits and HD Movie Source, the Star Trek Next Generation films are coming to 4K disc on April 4th.

  • Bruce Willis' Redemption - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Jan 15, 2023

Posted Sun Jan 15, 2023 at 12:00 PM PST by

Another month is halfway over, and fortunately for us, another week of releases is upon us.

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 34 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of January 15th - January 21st, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Import Monday begins with the Zavvi SteelBook of Halloween Ends, I like to cover art much better than the current Best Buy one. If they do a repeat like before, Best Buy will get a V2 release, which will be this artwork.

This week is another week with no actual new releases, but there are a few good catalog titles pining for our attention.

From the Paramount Presents line, (and one-upping Imprint Films' blu-ray only release) comes Double Jeopardy starring Tommy Lee Jones and Ashley Judd.

Closing out Paramount this week, a double-dip of Cloverfield, but this time as a semi-translucent slipcover SteelBook.

Just like Paramount, Shout Factory has a new catalog release of Wrath of Man this week,

and for a double-dip as a SteelBook, John Carpenter's They Live.

Next week, classic vigilante movie, tummy, and how bizarre.

    Blu-ray releases-

Did someone say Bruce Willis? Yes, I did, last week, and just now! Our man Bruce gets a sequel release from LionsGate this week, Detective Knight: Redemption. The third film in this series will be available on February 28th. How many movies did he film before announcing he was retiring?

Action double feature from Arrow Video, Angela Mao in Lady Whirlwind & Hapkido.

Anime highlights include Black Clover - Season 3 Complete Collection, The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation out of Debt - The Complete Season, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer, No Game, No Life - Complete Collection and One Piece: Season Twelve - Voyage Two.

From the Criterion Collection, Lars von Trier’s Europe Trilogy. I will leave the analyzing of this one to the experts, can't even pretend to know this one.

From 20th Century Studios, 'Highly Recommended' film The Menu. Sans a 4K disc and slipcover, this release is nearly perfect.

From Kino Lorber, Missing in Action Trilogy with Chuck Norris. If you opt for the individual titles instead, you gain individual slipcovers and lose the box, those films are Missing in Action, Missing in Action 2: The Beginning and Braddock: Missing in Action III.

From Universal, a drama depicting the events that spawned the creation of the civil rights movement, titled Till (as in Mamie Till-Mobley).

    Notable announcements from last week:

Disney has announced Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for blu-ray/4K release on February 7th. Interestingly enough, there are TWO Best Buy SteelBooks this go round. I like aspects of both of them, tough choice!

     The Fabelman's gets a blu-ray and 4K disc release on February 14th.

Warner Bros. is likely releasing more classics to 4K around April. If they follow the current formula, the UK will get a nice gift set option with some pretty cool swag, the US will get a disc only release. So far we are looking for The Maltese Falcon, Rebel Without a Cause and Cool Hand Luke.

The James Wan hit M3GAN currently has a preorder spot for blu-ray release. This being a Blumhouse release, don't hold your breath for a 4K. Maybe Mr. Wan has enough pull to make 4K happen?

  • Happy Rock Year - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Jan 1, 2023

Posted Sun Jan 1, 2023 at 12:00 PM PST by

Happy New Year! What are you most looking forward to this year in the home video category? Finally seeing The Abyss and the original Avatar on 4K BD100 Dolby Vision disc? Getting that new OLED and/or Atmos setup? Ten-Gig fiber internet so you can reliably stream 4K?

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 32 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of January 1st - January 7th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

The first full week of 2023 has not one, but TWO new release titles in the 4K category.

First from Warner Bros., another DCEU release titled Black Adam, this one stars Dwayne Johnson and comes as a standard edition, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook and as a Walmart Exclusive Pop Vinyl edition.

From LionsGate, Prey for the Devil, which falls in the horror/thriller category.

From Criterion Collection, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. All I need to know is it is a Terry Gilliam film, just take my money!

Cats (2019) *might* be getting a release this week, or it might get an official announcement to be released next month only to show a release date of this week when we get to next month. Confused?

Next week, Puxatawny Phil gets steely, Yesja and maybe 88-days have elapsed for one title while they've just begun for another.

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts for the above titles? Terrifier 2 was released last week, with the (unconfirmed) possibility there is a SteelBook at Walmart, Black Adam comes via Warner Bros, Prey for the Devil via LionsGate and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen gets a Criterion Collection blu-ray release.

Ain't gonna lie, we don't have a lot to work with this week to fluff the blu-ray releases section. Sometimes it is about the quality and not the quantity.

New drama from Universal Pictures titled Armageddon Time, with an all-star cast including Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong

Did not see a lot of these films pop up so this one might be right for you if you follow the monarchy, Elizabeth Windsor, a documentary about the world's longest ever serving queen.

Anime highlights include just Sabikui Bisco - The Complete Season and Sasaki and Miyano - The Complete Season.

Paramount offers up Star Trek: Prodigy: Season 1 this week. Not sure what to think of this one based on the trailer, but I certainly will take a look, mostly because I am a Trekkie.

Certainly not Bruce Willis but definitely action, Vertical Entertainment has The System (2022) this week.

     This week Amazon U.S. offers up Imprint Films' December releases;

    Notable Announcements from last week:

Nothing major announced this past week, being the week between Christmas and New Years, there is no surprise here.

Universal Studios did announce the film She Said for a January 10th release date. Amazon still has it listed for July, but they will come around.

Some of the botique labels have been busy adding titles for March(ish) street dates. Let's also not forget to keep our eyes peeled for Vinegary Syndrome's 2023 Subscription Offer in the next week or so.

  • Stranger Things Season One 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Coming From Target!

Posted Mon Nov 13, 2017 at 02:21 PM PST by
Stranger Things Season One Target Exclusive - High-Def Digest Blu-ray Review 6

Holy upside down double dip, Stranger Things fans!

Remember my review for that super cool VHS-shaped Blu-ray release of Stranger Things? Yeah, it wasn't that long ago. We even did an awesome unboxing video thinking that this release was going to be the final word on Netflix's ode to 80s science fiction/horror on physical media. Turns out that's not the case. As some lucky customers discovered at their local Target stores over the weekend, there is a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release on the way!

    Stranger Things

Yup, you read that right. Now, this isn't available in stores yet - or at least it shouldn't be. Apparently, some stores got their stock early, didn't know what they had, and put it out on shelves where some eagle-eyed shoppers knew something was a bit off and snapped them up before they were put away. I gave a call to all of my local Chicago-area stores and none of them had it in stock, but they confirmed to me that it is real.

If you're hunting and pecking around, here is the UPC number to ask for: 191764410522. The formal street date is also a bit of a mystery. One store told me their stock gets in on 11/27 and it's due out 11/28. Another store told me it doesn't street until 12/5. So this is yet another stealth Stranger Things release that is leaving a lot of important details hanging out around Barb in the upside down.

If you're on the hunt at your local stores, the box art is slightly different with a new picture of Eleven front and center and instead of a uniform black color, there's white trim along the bottom with the box given the fake distressed look. On the back, the tech specs detail 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray - but no mention of HDR or Dolby Vision. UPDATE: Sources on other forums who purchased the set stated the tech specs match Netflix's streaming options for Season 1 -- 4K but NO HDR with a 5.1 Dolby Digital audio mix. However, since this will be a 4K release, Steve's hair will probably look better than ever!

    Stranger Things

When confirmed artwork and tech specs are made available, we'll update our listings and crank out a review and probably another unboxing video while we're at it. Until then, we'll keep you posted as this craziness develops.
