One of A24's biggest box office successes is making its stand on 4K UHD and Blu-ray right after we shoot off fireworks for Independence Day! From writer and director Alex Garland, Civil War will come home thanks to Lionsgate offering up an Amazon-exclusive 4K set, a standard 4K set, and of course, Blu-ray.
While Hollywood is never one to miss an opportunity, you've got to hand it to A24 for delivering a taught war thriller during a fraught contentious election year. Then to have the stones to deliver something as a-political as a movie called Civil War can get! Garland delivered one hell of a tense and arresting film that brilliantly sidesteps politics while focusing on a small rag-tag team of reporters traveling across the country to Washington DC trying to capture the perfect photo. The film is due to arrive with Dolby Atmos audio and Dolby Vision HDR, you have to choose between the standard release, the Amazon-exclusive, or if you're rocking 1080p, the standard Blu-ray.
All three editions of Civil War are now up for pre-order - here's the full press release with all the gory details:

After an amazing 4K release from U.K.'s Second Sight, Sony plays catchup. On August 27th, Sony will deliver their own domestic 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive with a brand new SteelBook.
Well, don't that just beat the band? We get around to finally reviewing Second Sight's excellent 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Drive, Sony has to go and offer up their own new SteelBook. The danger of importing a disc is the domestic distributor will huff up and finally get their own disc out. That said, you can't blame a collector for getting too tired of waiting around for the studio to get off their duffs and give fans what they're asking for. Well, that's where we're at thanks to Sony getting their new SteelBook 4K UHD of Drive to the collector's marketplace. To their credit, Sony is nailing this 100th Anniversary celebration of Columbia Studios delivering one exciting catalog release announcement after another.
While we don't know if Sony did their own restoration work or if this will repurpose the Second Sight transfer, we do know it comes Refn-approved with Dolby Vision and Atmos audio

You can't explain it, you can't predict it! Buying the 4K won't bring your dad back... but it might vastly improve your home video collection! Starring Helen Hunt and the late great Bill Paxton, Jan de Bont's 'Twister' will finally come home to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in HDR with Atmos audio!
As this summer keeps dropping real-life tornados throughout the midwest, Warner Bros is capitalizing on the upcoming Twisters delivering one of the most highly-entertaining disaster films of the '90s. As many of you may remember all too well, the original Blu-ray release of Twister was something of a waxy DNR-riddled disaster. For years fans have been clamoring for a new and better release and it's finally here. Now we still don't know HDR grade for this (HDR10 base is guaranteed), the transfer has been overseen by director Jan de Bont and it will come with Atmos audio (thanks to the back artwork photo on Amazon) with some new and archival extra features.
The Twister 4K UHD Disc includes the following new and previously released special features:
Both the Standard Edition and SteelBook of Twister are up for pre-order! Now we know Germany's Turbine will be doing Their own release for the European markets - the film is owned by Universal over there. We don't know the specs for that edition yet, but when we do, obviously we'll let you all know. Happy Collecting!
The animated comedy 'Kung Fu Panda 4' starring Jack Black, Awkwafina, Viola Davis, Dustin Hoffman, Bryan Cranston, James Hong, Ian McShane, and Ke Huy Quan arrives on Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray on May 28.
In the fourth installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, a new Dragon Warrior must be found as Po faces his biggest threat so far. The film will also be available in a 4-Film Collection on Blu-ray.
Emmy winner and Golden Globe® nominee Jack Black (The Super Mario Bros. Movie, School of Rock) returns as Po, the world’s most unlikely kung fu master, in this butt-kicking new chapter from DreamWorks Animation’s beloved action-comedy franchise: KUNG FU PANDA 4. After learning he must find a new hero to take over as Dragon Warrior so that he may fulfill his destiny as the next spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace, Po decides to take one last adventurous mission. He teams up with a quick-witted thief named Zhen, voiced by Awkwafina (Migration, The Bad Guys), a corsac fox, to discover the truth about recent sightings of villains he’s defeated in the past. In a journey that puts both to the test, it will take a wicked, powerful sorceress, The Chameleon, voiced by Oscar® winner Viola Davis (Ender’s Game, The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), to bring them together and remind Po that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.

“My 4K UHD had torn himself from the player, and the scent, or maybe the stain it was, and him bleeding his bitrate away drove the rest of them mad. Then the collectors took to eating each other.”
Orson Welles' 1948 thriller THe Lady from Shanghai will devour its first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release from Sony, come July 23rd. From the terrific performances, the crisp dialog, and the incredible hall of mirrors finale, the film is one of Welles' all-time greats often overshadowed by his many other cinematic masterpieces. Co-starring Rita Hayworth, this iconic thriller will finally see it's day on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as a single-disc release with Dolby Vision HDR and a swath of archival extras.
The Lady from Shanghai - 4K Ultra HD
SYNOPSIS
Baffling murders, fascinating plot twists, and remarkable camerawork all contribute to this spellbinding, time-honored film noir written, directed by, and starring Orson Welles. Hired to work on a yacht belonging to the disabled husband of femme fatale Elsa Bannister (Rita Hayworth), Michael O’Hara (Welles) is an innocent man drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue and murder.
The subject of great controversy and scandal upon its initial release, THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI shocked 1948 audiences by presenting Hayworth with her flaming red hair cut short and dyed champagne blonde. THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI is now considered vintage Welles, with his famous hall-of-mirrors climax hailed as one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history.

The Criterion Collection has announced their August 2024 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray titles. This wave includes Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor in 4K, Brief Encounters / The Long Farewell: Two Films by Kira Muratova as well as Martha Coolidge's Not a Pretty Picture on Blu-ray, and finally Albert Brooks' Real Life and Mother - sold separately on both formats.
On August 13, The Criterion Collection will offer Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (the Blu-ray is already available).
The Last Emperor - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor won nine Academy Awards, unexpectedly sweeping every category in which it was nominated—quite a feat for a challenging, multilayered epic directed by an Italian and starring an international cast. Yet the scope of the film was, and remains, undeniably powerful—the life of Emperor Puyi, who took the throne in 1908, at age three, before witnessing decades of cultural and political upheaval within and without the walls of the Forbidden City. Recreating Qing-dynasty China with astonishing detail and unparalleled craftsmanship by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti, The Last Emperor is also an intimate character study of one man reconciling personal responsibility and political legacy.
DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
On the same date, Brief Encounters / The Long Farewell: Two Films by Kira Muratova will arrive on Blu-ray.
Brief Encounters / The Long Farewell: Two Films by Kira Muratova - The Criterion Collection
Nobody made films like Kira Muratova. Uncompromising and uncategorizable, the Ukrainian iconoclast withstood decades of censorship to realize her singular vision in hypnotically beautiful, expressionistically heightened films that remain unique in their ability to evoke complex interior worlds. Her first two solo features, Brief Encounters and The Long Farewell, are fascinatingly fragmented portraits of women navigating work, romance, and family life with a mix of deep yearning and playful pragmatism. Long suppressed by Soviet authorities, these films became legendary—along with their maker—and they now make for a revelatory introduction to this most fearlessly original of artists.
SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
Martha Coolidge's Not a Pretty Picture arrives on August 20.
Not a Pretty Picture - The Criterion Collection
Trailblazing filmmaker Martha Coolidge made her feature debut with this unflinchingly personal hybrid of documentary and fiction. Centered on an intense reenactment of Coolidge’s experience of rape in her adolescence, the film casts Michele Manenti (also a survivor) as the director’s younger self, and observes the actor and her castmates as they engage in a profound dialogue about what it means to recreate these traumatic memories, and about their attitudes concerning consent and self-blame. A high-stakes experiment in metacinema that broke new ground with its uncompromising examination of date rape, Not a Pretty Picture brings a stunning immediacy to questions about the on-screen representation of sexual violence and the limits of artistic catharsis.
DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
The 1979 comedy Real Life from Albert Brooks is headed for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray on August 27.
Real Life - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Decades before reality television reigned supreme, there was Albert Brooks’s debut feature, Real Life, a brilliantly deadpan, stylistically innovative satire about the perils and pitfalls of trying to capture the truth on film. The writer-director plays “Albert Brooks,” a narcissistic Hollywood filmmaker who plans to spend the year in Phoenix embedded with Warren and Jeanette Yeager (Charles Grodin and Frances Lee McCain) and their two children, deploying an arsenal of cutting-edge equipment (including the over-the-head Ettinaur 226XL camera) to capture an American family’s ordinary day-to-day. Chronicling the project’s disastrous fallout, as the meddlesome Albert can’t help getting too close to his subjects, this pioneering mockumentary is more relevant than ever amid today’s media landscape.
DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
And rounding out the month also on August 27 is another Albert Brooks comedy, Mother - starring Brooks and Debbie Reynolds on both 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray.
Mother - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Reeling after his second divorce and struggling with writer’s block, sci-fi novelist John Henderson (Albert Brooks) resolves to figure out where his life went wrong, and hits on an unorthodox solution: moving back in with his relentlessly disapproving, cheerfully passive-aggressive mother (Debbie Reynolds), whose favorite son has always been John’s younger brother, Jeff (Rob Morrow). It’s an experiment that, however harebrained, delivers surprising results. Brooks’s film perfectly blends the writer-director-star’s biting wit with insight and inviting warmth, while giving him a formidable foil in the delightful Reynolds, triumphant in a comeback role that’s equal parts caustic and charming.
DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
The Criterion Collection's August 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases should be up for pre-order soon and we will update the links when they are available.
Lionsgate and director Guy Ritchie's action-packed comedy 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare' starring Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Til Schweiger, with Henry Golding, and Cary Elwes will be hitting Blu-ray, 4K UHD Blu-ray, and a limited edition 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook (only at Amazon) on June 25. Electronic sell-through will be available on June 18.
The film is based on historical events as well as the book The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: How Churchill’s Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops by Damien Lewis, and the story itself also inspired Ian Fleming's post-war James Bond novels.
Directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie, this action-comedy tells the incredible true story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming. The top secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks led by Gus March-Phillipps (Henry Cavill), goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately, the task force’s audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern black ops warfare.
