Upcoming 4K UHD Blu-ray Releases - February 2021 Edition

With COVID still penning in theatrical release dates from the major studios, new releases have been a bit soft of late. January had only a few new domestic U.S. 4K UHD Blu-ray releases, and February looks to be a bit of a repeat. There are some great flicks coming, but nothing like the huge majors we saw from October through December of 2020.

Once again we're faced with a 4K UHD Blu-ray release that apparently won't be available through the Criterion Collection. Do The Right Thing had a hell of a Blu-ray release so hopefully, this 4K disc brings something to the table to make it worthwhile. Also on that note - Target is getting more aggressive in the SteelBook arena taking some punch out of Best Buy with a Do The Right Thing Exclusive SteelBook and a little less interesting is a Fifty Shades Trilogy Exclusive SteelBook. Target tended to offer their own exclusive Book-style packaging. Recently they've been selling in stores SteelBooks that were past Best Buy and Walmart exclusives at fairly cheap prices. Best Buy is offering up a 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi Exclusive SteelBook - however, much like their Interstellar 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook - it's a simple repackaging of the older Blu-ray SteelBook.

Still, while we may not be getting some huge releases, we are getting a few decent back catalog hits. Import markets will be offering other solid releases Old Boy from the UK, Possession from France - we'll be covering those as best we can but with international shipping being what it is, it might take us a little longer to get those.

Here are the U.S. domestic 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases for February

Wonder Woman 1984 4K UHD Blu-ray Coming March 22nd in UK

While this flick wasn't everyone's favorite trip back to the 80s - the 4K UHD Blu-ray release looks to be hitting the market March 22nd in the UK according to Zavvi. Since that's a Monday and US releases hit on a Tuesday, it's a safe guess that WW1984 will be arriving in the U.S. on the 23rd or damn close to that date. We don't know the final specs for this release, HDR, Dolby Vision, or if it'll even have an Atmos audio mix or not. The HBOMax presentation had Dolby Vision and Atmos, so we'd be very surprised if the 4K UHD Disc didn't include those specs.

Zavvi has a pair of releases to offer fans of the film - if you are one - available for pre-order:

Wonder Woman 1984 - Standard Edition

or - Wonder Woman 1984 Exclusive with Figurine

For the price of the Exclusive with figurine, I hope that's a Hot Toys 1/6 figure or a damn impressive sculpt and scale! $229.99 seems a bit much if it's just a tiny little figure.

Since this movie has yet to be announced on home video for the North American market, we don't know if that figure release will come this way, but considering previous DCEU releases - or just any big movie release in general, we're pretty sure a SteelBook will probably be available from Best Buy. As we hear new news we'll update this article with details and pre-order info.

Here's the list of bonus features according to the listing from Zavvi:

  • SCENE STUDIES: The Mall and The Open Road
  • THE MAKING OF WONDER WOMAN 1984: Expanding the Wonder
  • Small but Mighty
  • Meet the Amazons
  • Gag Reel
  • Black Gold Infomercial
  • WONDER WOMAN 1984 Retro Remix
  • GAL & KRISTEN: Friends Forever
  • Gal & Krissy Having Fun
Charlton Heston Stars in 1956's The Ten Commandments Coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray March 30th

"I bring you these Fifteen...CRASH... Ten!! Ten Commandments!"

Quite timely after a literal plague hit the planet - the 1956 epic The Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston and Yule Brynner comes to 4K UHD Blu-ray on March 30th, 2021 for the first time featuring a Native 4K transfer with Dolby Vision HDR! This three-disc set features the film on one single BD-100 4K UHD disc, with 2 BD-50 discs offering the film in 1080p SDR and extra bonus features.

Unfortunately, this set does not appear to include all of the bonus features of the DigiBook set that came out last year which were carried over from the 2011 set. The biggest omission would be the original 1923 version of the film. Specs may not be 100% finalized so that and some of the other bonus content could make its way to the set before street date, but just in case, don't go trading in that older release just yet.

The Ten Commandments - so far - is only up for Pre-Order at Target, but we anticipate Amazon and Best Buy to add it soon now that it's been officially announced.

Check out the full press release from Paramount:

4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo with Digital Debuts March 30, 2021 in Time for Easter

Renowned director Cecil B. DeMille’s 1956 epic THE TEN COMMANDMENTS arrives in spectacular 4K Ultra HD for the first time on March 30, 2021 from Paramount Home Entertainment.

Bringing to life the inspiring story of Moses in all its stunning glory, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS has withstood the test of time.  To commemorate the film’s 65th anniversary in 2021, DeMille’s groundbreaking cinematic triumph will be available to watch at home in time for Easter in sparkling 4K Ultra HD with High Dynamic Range.

As part of the restoration done in 2010, the film was scanned in 6K and those files were the basis for this brand-new Dolby Vision version, which shows off the full beauty of the original VistaVision negative. The VistaVision format used special cameras to feed 35mm film into the camera horizontally in order to capture a wider image spread over two 35mm film frames, giving VistaVision twice the resolution of regular 35mm film.  In addition, Paramount spent well over 150 hours doing new color work and clean-up on the scan.  The move to Dolby Vision created the opportunity to further improve the look of the film:  blacks are enhanced and improvements were made to smooth out special effects mattes to create the most vibrant and pristine image possible.

The 4K film presentation contains an introduction by DeMille, an intermission, an overture/exit music card, and an entr’acte card, along with a DTS-HD 5.1 lossless soundtrack.

The new set includes a 4K Ultra HD disc, two Blu-ray discs, and access to a Digital copy of the film.  Following is a breakdown of the disc contents:

4K Ultra HD Disc

·       1956 feature film in 4K Ultra HD

·       Commentary by Katherine Orrison, author of “Written in Stone: Making Cecil B. DeMille’s Epic The Ten Commandments”

Blu-ray Disc #1

·       1956 feature film in high definition (Part 1)

·       Commentary by Katherine Orrison, author of “Written in Stone: Making Cecil B. DeMille’s Epic The Ten Commandments”

Blu-ray Disc #2

·       1956 feature film in high definition (Part 2)

·       Commentary by Katherine Orrison, author of “Written in Stone: Making Cecil B. DeMille’s Epic The Ten Commandments”

·       Newsreel footage of the film’s New York premiere

·       Theatrical trailers, including at 10-minute “making of” trailer

For sheer pageantry and spectacle, few motion pictures can claim to equal the splendor of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. DeMille’s last motion picture made Charlton Heston a superstar and remains an unprecedented achievement and perennial fan favorite.  Filmed in Egypt and the Sinai with one of the biggest sets ever constructed for a motion picture, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS tells the story of the life of Moses (Heston).  Once favored in the Pharaoh's (Yul Brynner) household, Moses turned his back on a privileged life to lead his people to freedom.

George Romero's Dawn of the Dead Standard 4K UHD/Blu-ray Release from Second Sight Coming in March

When there's barely any room left on the shelf... Dawn of the Dead will get a smaller release...

If you missed out on Second Sight's incredible Seven-Disc Dawn of the Dead Limited Edition set, you still get a crack at their 4-Disc Standard Edition 4K UHD/Blu-ray releases on March 22nd 2021!

Dawn of the Dead (1978) - 4K UHD Blu-ray Standard Edition

Dawn of the Dead (1978) - Blu-ray Standard Edition

While these Standard Edition releases miss out on the book and three Soundtrack CDs, you do get the better end of all the best bonus features. Note - the standard Blu-rays are Region-B locked while the three triple-layered 4K UHD Blu-rays are per usual Region Free. A domestic U.S. release is yet to happen - and probably will at some point - but this is a great option for fans who are tired of waiting. Also, if the price tag of that Limited Edition set was a little shocking, these standard releases are much more agreeable.

As of right now, the only place I've seen these available for pre-order is on Zavvi. If/When Amazon UK or DiabolikDVD has these to offer for pre-order/sale, we'll update our listings accordingly. I personally ordered my Limited Edition 4K set from Zavvi and it was shipped and packed safely in a nice big box and crossed the Atlantic Pond and through customs and shipping during the busy holiday rush without issue. I heard some horror stories about some damaged deliveries, but that hasn't been my experience importing from UK retailers thus far.

Here are the specs:

Dredd (2012) Is Getting A New 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook From Best Buy

Are you ready? You look ready to buy Dredd on 4K UHD Blu-ray all over again. As has been Lionsgate's pattern of late with recent releases like Halloween or The Evil Dead - they're dusting off another popular fan favorite and giving it an elaborate decorative deluxe SteelBook release exclusive to Best Buy. Not that I really need to buy Dredd again for what would be the third time - I'm willing because I'm really digging this new artwork. -

I'm a big fan of this movie and dearly wished it had been able to move forward with sequel plans. The fan campaign to buy Dredd as many times as you can to influence the purse-string holders to finance a new movie is long dead - but I'm willing to jump in for an artwork upgrade not only because this is a badass piece - but I've never liked the original poster art for Dredd - looked exactly like Ben Affleck's Daredevil.

The Dredd 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook is up for pre-order on Best Buy

4K UHD Blu-ray Releases - January 2021!

New Year - New 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases - or at least a few.

After the amazingly exciting and aggressive 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release slate in December from the major and niche studios, things calm down a little bit in January. Our wallets certainly could use the time to recover a little bit! But, as our bank accounts recharge a little, there are some solid releases coming up for this month as we head into an interesting slate for February and March. The big heavy hitters are a pair of John Carpenter releases from Scream Factory - They Live and Prince of Darkness which were previously only available in the EU from Studio Canal - if you didn't import them, they're excellent discs and there's no reason to believe that Scream Factory is using a different master for these.

Here's what's coming up -

January 5th, 2021

Love and Monsters - 4K UHD Blu-ray

January 19th, 2021

2012 - 4K UHD Blu-ray

They Live - 4K UHD Blu-ray

Andrew Niccol's Gattaca Coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray March 23rd 2021

The classic 1997 science fiction masterpiece about the perils of human perfection lands on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from Sony Pictures in a deluxe SteelBook package.

Gattaca 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Per the announcement from Sony, this 4K UHD Blu-ray disc will feature a new 4K remaster with HDR10 from the original camera negative and a new Dolby Atmos audio mix to match. As of now, the only bonus features appear to be recycled from previous releases. With that, what's really cool about this announcement is that it was one of the featured titles from Sony's Survey they put out a couple months ago to help them determine what fan favorites would get solo releases or be included in another Columbia Classics 4K set. Hopefully, this means more deep catalog titles will be making their 4K debuts shortly. The last 1080p Blu-ray for Gattaca came out on Blu-ray 12 years ago. It was a highlight for the format at release, but it has needed a revisit for some time so this is very welcome news indeed.

As of now, Gattaca isn't yet up for pre-order but we expect those links to go live any time now and we'll update our listing ASAP.

Home Video Releases For The Week of November 24, 2020

Welcome to Episode 27, or weekly look at the highlights of what's coming to the home video market.

Happy Thanksgiving! At least, to our readers in the USA. This week's release calendar has a fair amount of titles on it, but with possible Black Friday deals, followed up by Cyber Monday, many of us will be pretty selective this week, at least on new releases. Anyone secure their new Xbox or Playstation system last week? Shopped any Criterion or Arrow Video sale titles this month?

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray/Digital Releases-

First on the agenda, if you want what appears to be the most extensive release for Total Recall (1990) in 4K, you will have to import it, it has a Monday release date. You might have to find it on Zavvi if Amazon doesn't have it available. Also available, as a SteelBook but without all the extras, but keep in mind that a domestic release SteelBook is in a couple of weeks that appears identical.

Domestic 4K titles releasing on Tuesday comprises of Deadly Games (Dial Code Santa Claus,) Kino's release of Mad Max and Peninsula. The general release of The Beastmaster was pused back a month as this week's release appears to be a Black Friday Vinegar Syndrome shop release.

HD Blu-ray/Digital releases-

The digital release of Fatman is available this week. I love the premise, it sounds pretty original. Check out Matthew's review. I hope this comes to disc by Christmas, Paramount does have a pre-order for the disc available here.

Where to begin with this week's Blu-ray releases? I guess alphabetically til we see a highlight.

Looks like Anime has the first highlight, with the letter "A". From Sentai Filmworks, Assassins Pride: Complete Collection. Ef: A Tale of Memories - Complete Collection gets a SteelBook release this week.  Another letter A, FUNimation releases Azur Lane: The Complete Series on disc this week. Discotek's contributions this week all appear to be in their native Japanese language, no English dubs, except for the Lupin the 3rd movie.

LionsGate brings another Action themed movie titled Ava, this doesn't sound like a unique plot but still could be 96 minutes of decent entertainment. Delayed from last week, a film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Iron Mask. Good to see Ahnold is still making films, I actually thought of him after watching Clint Eastwood's The Mule the other night, what are some of the older film icons doing today?

The wait for Season Five of Better Call Saul is over this week, presented by Sony Home Entertainment.

I have total respect for the independent studios that license and bring us movies and TV we may never see without their efforts. Kino Lorber is one such company, and if I omit them week to week, it's not from disrespect, it's that the releases of the week might have more limited appeal. This week though, Kino is bringing you Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: The Complete Collection as well as a single disc release of the movie titled Awakening, which launched the TV series. Babylon Berlin: Season 3 releases this week as well. If you're not equipped for 4K, Kino has a new Blu-ray release for Mad Max to appease you instead.

Criterion Collection fans look for Essential Fellini, and right now Amazon is trying to be competitive on the price of these releases. In what would have probably been a good 4K release, The Irishman, starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. I am grateful to see this release nevertheless, why the originating studio didn't release it is beyond me.

Now, for something completely different, Arrow's releasing He Came from the Swamp: The William Grefé Collection. Again, very competitive price for this right now, go for it!

If you had never imported the Monty Python's Flying Circus mega-set from Network TV, Universal offers a domestic release instead to consider.

Notable announcements from last week:

Cinema Paradiso 4K & Blu-ray versions have been delayed yet again, the new date is December 8th. Greatness takes patience, hope it is worth the wait.

Speaking of Arrow Video, they have completed a deal with Blue Underground to release Django and Texas Adios movies. The Blu-rays were listed previously but pulled. The bigger news is that they will be offering Django on 4K disc, slated for April 27th. No word on Texas Adios in 4K.

Final details and dates have been set for the Warner Archive December 2020 slate.

Sony Pictures has announced 2020 comedy/drama The Last Shift for December 29th. Order link coming very soon.

Order Links from last week's Criterion title announcement are live.

FUNimation has announced their February 2021 titles. Somewhat tepid list, some titles might interest you so check em out any way.

2K/BD Release Calendar

Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price? For sure am getting the Mad Max 4K release and Criterion Release of The Irishman. If Iron Mask appears at my local Walmart for around $15 (very probable) I will likely get it. I am interested in the Buck Rogers Complete Collection, but with all the box sets I have gotten recently though, it will go somewhere near the top of my wish list. Anime interests this week, Assassins Pride, Azur Lane and the Ef releases.

2020 Holiday Gift Guide - Pandemic Edition

It's time to hunker in your bunker this holiday season and do your best to spread some holiday cheer - while you try not to spread anything else. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic obviously has put a damper on the traditional holiday get-together where everyone travels from miles around to gorge themselves on an impressive spread.

While delivering a full turkey dinner complete with trimmings isn't feasible for everyone; if you're looking to send someone something special - or treat-yo-self for getting through an incredibly tough year, there are options. With most movie theaters across the country closed or only showing a scant few films, the big studios dug deep into their catalogs and pull out a lot of hits for new 4K UHD Blu-rays or give fan favorites their first outing on Blu-ray. And with that, let's dig into our list

Odds & Ends & Stocking Stuffers

SteelBooks make collecting Blu-rays and 4K UHD Blu-rays a lot of fun as they usually offer much more interesting custom artwork - but you have to take care of them! You don't want other titles rubbing alongside them or dinging into them. G2-size protective cases should fit just about every SteelBook - even ones with an extra plastic slipcover. Tell that collector you care about them and their collection.

Slipcovers not only look great, keep your movie's safe, but they can also increase in value if it's a rare title. Protective cases are essential for any collector.

If you have a movie fan in your home, chances are pretty good they know all about Mondo. On top of amazing limited edition custom posters, Mondo has been churning out high-end collectibles and action figures. The Creature is a recent addition to their shop. Also available in a full-color version. Other figures include Iron Giant, Kratos from God of WarCatwomanMr. Freeze, and Rick and Morty to name a few.

So this isn't on Blu-ray, sadly, but it's such a great show and with Netflix's overall video quality being so hit and miss lately - this Complete Series is a great set and a great gift for anyone with a spotty internet connection.

While an Amazon gift card isn't the world's greatest gift, but if you're stuck and you don't know what that movie collector on your list has or needs - this at least lets them get something they know they need on the collection shelf - or help them pre-order a new upcoming release scheduled for after the holidays.

Take care and be safe out there

Holidays are normally a great time to get together with family to celebrate, have a great time, and exchange some gifts while eating massive amounts of food and tasty treats. 2020 hasn't been a normal year - not by a long shot. Hopefully, everyone out there is able to have a safe and fun Holiday season - even if you have to celebrate with family virtually or within your closely-knit little pod.

The team here at High-Def Digest wants to wish you all the best and hope you're still able to enjoy yourselves. Thanks for reading and being an awesome group of folks to interact with and enjoy the love of movies and collecting. We hope this list helps make your holiday shopping a little easier - whether you're buying for someone on your list or snagging something fun for yourself.

Happy Holidays Everyone!
