Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season Two Boldly Beaming to 4K UHD & Blu-Ray Dec. 5th

Boldly Beaming To Blu-ray and 4K, Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season Two Arrives In Time For The Holidays!

Between Star Trek: Picard Season Three and these last two seasons of Strange New Worlds, the galaxy of Trek finally feels like it's in good hands, staying true to what made the various films and series great, but also boldly going in new directions. Including a damned entertaining song-and-dance episode! Now you can plan on adding this latest season to your 4K or Blu-ray shelf ahead of the holidays. Arriving on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with standard edition releases as well as nifty SteelBooks:

I know SteelBooks aren't everyone's bag, but I dig the alternate magnetic character cover cards so if you don't like Captain Pike's square-jawed mug you can swap him out for the more attractive Rebecca Romijn. But then the extra cool feature for both SteelBook sets is the "Subspace Rhapsody" poster! I'm genuinely over the moon they've really leaned into how fun that episode was. Sure it was a bit of high-camp for the series, but after so many years of Trek being taken so deathly seriously with massive convoluted conspiracy theory poppycock plots, I'll take that episode over Discovery any day.

Here's what's coming in the set:

Prepare to explore Strange New Worlds with more than 2 hours of special features, including featurettes that take you behind the scenes of this remarkable series. Plus, get even more Strange New Worlds with deleted, extended, and alternate scenes, including an alternate take of the Klingon song from “Subspace Rhapsody.”

On October 23, Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai starring Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in his Cannes Best Actor winning role will be getting a 4K release (4K restoration) in the UK from STUDIOCANAL. A 4K SteelBook will be available at Zavvi.

Pre-orders are now available.

Forest Whitaker (Ghost Dog) lives above the world, alongside a flock of birds, in a homemade shack on the roof of an abandoned building. Guided by the words of an ancient samurai text, Ghost Dog is a professional killer able to dissolve into the night and move through the city unnoticed. When Ghost Dog’s code is dangerously betrayed by the dysfunctional mafia family that occasionally employs him, he reacts strictly in accordance with the Way of the Samurai.

Featuring moody cinematography by the great Robby Müller (Paris, Texas), a sublime score by the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, and a host of colourful character actors (including a memorably stone-faced Henry Silva), GHOST DOG: THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI plays like a pop-culture-sampling cinematic mixtape built around a one-of-a-kind tragic hero. Described by Time Out as “very funny, insightful and highly original”, the film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and remains one of Jarmusch’s best-loved films.

Disney Scares Up A Spooky Halloween Season with Haunted Mansion on 4K UHD & Blu-ray October 17th

After oddly releasing in the dead of summer against stacked competition, Disney's family-friendly spookfest comes home to 4K UHD and Blu-ray

Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, Haunted Mansion tells the story of Gabbie (Rosario Dawson), a single mom, who discovers that the home she and her son share is haunted by irksome ghosts. Hoping to restore domestic tranquility, Gabbie recruits a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid the house of the supernatural squatters. A non-stop blend of action, adventure and comedy featuring an all-star cast that includes LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto, Haunted Mansion was written by Katie Dippold and directed by Justin Simien. The film’s producers are Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, with Nick Reynolds and Tom Peitzman serving as executive producers.

Disc News Round-up: The 4K Floodgates Have Opened!

There has been a lot of good stuff announced for home video lately, with a surprising number of them being for the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. We've got another wave of Hitchcock, some creepy cult classics, and much more.  Physical media sure seems to be making a comeback!

First, let's take a quick glimpse into next year as Kino Cult is preparing to release of a bunch of cult classics on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray starting in January with Clive Barker's Underworld. They have also announced that they are preparing Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS, Ilsa: Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks, Ilsa the Tigress of Siberia, and Ilsa, the Wicked Warden for 4K as well, although no confirmed dates for those four releases. They will, however, have new HDR Dolby Vision masters.  Definitely keep these out of reach of children.

Ilsa

And now back to 2023, Universal has set The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection Vol. 3 for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on October 31. The five included films: Rope, Topaz, Frenzy, Torn Curtain, and The Man Who Knew Too Much - will be sold separately as well.

Disney has announced the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection - a mega boxed collector's set containing 100 features on Blu-ray. The set will hit stores on November 14. You can read all about that in our previous coverage here. Apparently the set's MSRP is a whopping $1500 and it will only be available on Walmart.com.  See the clip below. Additionally, they've also set the iconic animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 10 with a SteelBook only at Best Buy..

Warner Brothers will be bringing the first season of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman to Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 28. Digital will be available September 18.

Fans of the classic sports drama Rudy starring Sean Astin will be pleased to know that Sony is prepping the film for 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 14. The release will be a SteelBook and will include Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and a brand new Director's Cut of the movie!

Sony has more - Black Hawk Down & The Guns of Navarone will both be getting limited edition 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBooks on November 7. These two releases surprisingly also have a Dolby Vision upgrade.

Paramount Scares Vol. 1 is a limited edition 4K UHD Blu-ray boxed set of five horror films arriving just in time for Halloween on October 24. This set includes Rosemary's Baby (1968), Pet Sematary (1989), Crawl (2019), Smile (2022), and a mystery title. The deluxe collector's set will have various collector's items among them an issue of Fangoria produced exclusively for this release.

Paramount Scares Volume 1 4K

Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One starring Tom Cruise will land on 4K UHD Blu-ray, 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook, and Blu-ray on October 31. Digital will hit on October 10.

The Academy Award winner Terms of Endearment is headed to 4K as part of the Paramount Presents limited edition series on November 23rd. Check out the full details here.

Scream Factory is giving the horror cult classic Night of the Demons a 4K Collector's Edition upgrade on October 3. The two sequels arrive on the same date, however only in Blu-ray Collector's Editions. Full details here

And last but certainly not least,  A24's independent horror smash hit Talk to Me from brothers Danny and Michael Philippou (of @RackaRacka YouTube channel) is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray on October 3. It's also worth mentioning that Amazon has an exclusive 4K release - you can read our full coverage for those here.

Studiocanal UK has given a 4K restoration to Jim Jarmusch’s Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai starring Forest Whitaker and will release it on home video in the UK. You can pre-order the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Zavvi will have an exclusive 4K SteelBook
