Arrow Video Announces and Details April 4K UHD and Blu-ray SlateFive titles are currently announced for a home video release this April from Arrow, although one of them looks to be UK only so you may have to import that one. One of their most anticipated releases to the 4K format this month is Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt arriving on April 26th (U.S./Canada/UK). THE FUTURE IS HISTORY Following the commercial and critical success of The Fisher King, Terry Gilliam next feature would turn to science fiction and a screenplay by Janet and David Peoples (Blade Runner, Unforgiven) inspired by Chris Marker’s classic short film La Jetée. In 1996, a deadly virus is unleashed by a group calling themselves the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, destroying much of the world’s population and forcing survivors underground. In 2035, prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis, Die Hard) is chosen to go back in time and help scientists in their search for a cure. Featuring an Oscar-nominated turn by Brad Pitt (Fight Club) as mental patient Jeffrey Goines, Twelve Monkeys would become Gilliam’s most successful film and is now widely regarded as a sci-fi classic. Arrow Films are proud to present the film in a stunning new restoration. 4K UHD BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES Brand new restoration from a 4K scan of the original negative by Arrow Films, approved by director Terry Gilliam 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) Lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 stereo soundtracks Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing Audio commentary by Terry Gilliam and producer Charles Roven The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of Twelve Monkeys, feature-length making-of documentary by Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe (Lost in La Mancha) The Film Exchange with Terry Gilliam, a 1996 interview with Gilliam and critic Jonathan Romney, recorded at the London Film Festival Appreciation by Ian Christie, author of Gilliam on Gilliam The Twelve Monkeys Archives Theatrical trailer Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Gary Pullin GUARANTEED THROUGH PREORDERS ONLY FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collector’s booklet featuring writing on the film by Nathan Rabin and Ian Christie Next on Blu-ray, we have Chia-Liang Liu's action-drama The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter on April 5th (U.S./Canada) at that. After one of its lead actors (cherub-faced action icon Alexander Fu Sheng) unexpectedly died midway through production, master director Lau Kar-leung (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin) retooled his latest martial arts epic, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, as the ultimate action spectacular in tribute to the fallen star. Loosely based upon the legendary Yang dynasty chronicled in Chinese folklore, the film starts as the family patriarch and all but two of his sons are brutally wiped out in a bloody battle. One surviving son (Fu Sheng) returns to his mother and two sisters, deeply traumatized; the other (Gordon Liu) escapes and joins a nearby monastery while in hiding. Once he learns his sister (Kara Hui) has been captured by their enemies, however, the warrior-turned-monk realizes he must renounce his peaceful ideals in order to mount a rescue mission and avenge his family. Made during the legendary Shaw Brothers studio’s twilight years as a filmmaking powerhouse, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter is often regarded as director Lau’s masterpiece, as elegiac and suffused with anguish as it is thrillingly violent (not least in its bone-crunching, teeth-smashing climax). BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES Brand new 2K restoration from the original camera negative by Arrow Films High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray presentation Original lossless Cantonese, Mandarin and English mono audio Optional English subtitles, plus hard-of-hearing subtitles for the English dub Brand new commentary by Jonathan Clements, author of A Brief History of China Newly filmed appreciation by film critic and historian Tony Rayns Interviews with stars Gordon Liu, Lily Li and Yeung Ching-ching, filmed by Frédéric Ambroisine in 2004 A Tribute to Fu Sheng, a short film commemorating the late actor that played before early screenings of The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, presented via a German-dubbed telecine (the best available copy) with English subtitles Alternate opening credits, as The Invincible Pole Fighters Theatrical trailer Image gallery Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Marc Aspinall On the 19th comes the two film set Rogue Cops and Racketeers: Two Crime Thrillers from Enzo G. Castellari .(U.S./Canada/UK). Over a long and wide-ranging career, director Enzo G. Castellari (Keoma, The Inglorious Bastards) helmed some of the most infamous of all the poliziotteschi – the gritty, action-packed crime films that proliferated in Italy throughout the 70s. Buckle up for a heart-stopping thrill ride through the seedy underbelly of Italian society in two of his most celebrated thrillers! In 1976’s The Big Racket, Inspector Nico Palmieri (Fabio Testi, What Have You Done to Solange?) is hot on the heels of a gang of ruthless racketeers. Realizing he’s not going to get anywhere within the confines of the law, Nico recruits a crack squad of civilians to dole out their own brand of justice. Then, in 1977’s The Heroin Busters, rule-flouting cop Fabio (Testi) goes deep undercover, chasing a globe-trotting ring of drug-smugglers suspected to be operating out of Rome. But can he and Mike Hamilton (David Hemmings, Deep Red), an Interpol agent with a hair-trigger temper, stay one step ahead of the criminals long enough to bring them down from the inside? Featuring death-defying stunts, explosive shoot-outs and a pair of addictive, toe-tapping soundtracks courtesy of the De Angelis brothers (Torso) and legendary prog rock group Goblin (Suspiria), these two films represent the crème de la crème of the Italian crime thriller, both making their high definition debuts with stunning new restorations in this feature-packed box set from Arrow! 2-DISC LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS Brand new 2K restorations of both films from the original 35mm camera negatives by Arrow Films High Definition Blu-ray™ (1080p) presentations Original Italian and English front and end titles Restored original lossless mono Italian and English soundtracks Newly translated English subtitles for the Italian soundtracks Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing for the English soundtracks New audio commentaries on both films by critics Adrian J. For five decades Claude Chabrol navigated the unpredictable waters of Cinema, leaving in his wake more than fifty feature films that remain among the most quietly devastating genre movies ever made. Sardonic, provocative, unsettling, Chabrol’s films cut to the quick with a clarity and honesty honed to razor sharpness. The Swindle (Rien Ne Va Plus) sees Chabrol at perhaps his most playful as a pair of scam artists, Isabelle Huppert and Michel Serrault, get in over their heads. But who is scamming who and who do you trust in a life built on so many lies? The murder of a 10 year old girl sparks rumours and gossip in The Color of Lies (Au Coeur Du Mensonge), as suspicion falls on René (Jacques Gamblin) the dour once famous painter, now art teacher, who was the last person to see her alive. Enigmatic, perverse, seductive, Isabelle Huppert encapsulates everything that makes Nightcap (Merci Pour Le Chocolat) a film John Waters calls “Cinematic Perfection” in this tale of suppressed family secrets. Finally, in The Flower of Evil (La Fleur Du Mal), incest, old money and intergenerational guilt come under the scalpel as an outwardly perfect bourgeois family begins to unravel when the wife involves herself in politics. Though influenced by Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock and Jean Renoir, Chabrol’s voice was entirely and assuredly his own, influencing in turn filmmakers like Bong Joon-ho, James Gray and Dominik Moll. His amused, unblinkered view of life and refusal to judge his characters makes his films timelessly relevant and accessible to all. Arrow Video is proud to present this second collection of films by Claude Chabrol with a wealth of new and archival extras. The 4K disc itself will be all regions but the bonus features are Region B. Widely heralded as one of the greatest serial killer movies of all time, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer presents a bleak and unflinching dive into the mind of a mass murderer. Recently released from prison, the nomadic Henry (Michael Rooker, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Walking Dead) finds temporary abode in the rundown Chicago lodgings of a former jail acquaintance and small-time drug dealer, Otis (Tom Towles). Hiding behind his unremarkable employment as a pest exterminator, Henry leads a double life, prowling the streets by night on a brutal and apparently motiveless killing spree. As the bodies mount up, Otis finds himself inducted into Henry’s dark secret world, but when Otis’ sister Becky (Tracy Arnold) moves in, herself fleeing from an uncomfortable domestic situation, it quickly becomes apparent that two’s company, but three’s a crowd. Based on the horrific true-life crimes of Henry Lee Lucas, the harrowing controversial debut feature from John McNaughton (Mad Dog and Glory, Wild Things) returns to the UK in its best-looking release ever, in a new 4K restoration supervised by the director himself. 4K UHD BLU-RAY LIMITED EDITION FEATURES Brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negatives, approved by John McNaughton 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in HDR10 Original 2.0 stereo mix and 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Eric Adrian Lee Limited edition 60-page booklet featuring new writing by Shaun Kimber, Peter Vronsky, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and Julian Petley Booklet containing the original storyboards for Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Double-sided fold-out poster Six collector’s postcards (Limited Edition exclusive) DISC ONE – FEATURE & EXTRAS (4K ULTRA HD BLU-RAY) Brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negatives 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) Brand new audio commentary by John McNaughton & Steven A. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray & Blu-ray Release Guide - January 16, 2022 - January 22, 2022Mid way through January already, how are your New Years Resolutions working for ya? I try not to go into anything unrealistic myself! Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 35 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- Just like last week, it looks like a pretty busy week considering it is January. Getting the new release first, Last Night in Soho comes to us via Universal Pictures. There appears to be no SteelBook domestically at this time. Zavvi UK has one, and HMV has a variant slip-case release. Everything else this week are catalog titles. Be grateful for the smaller labels. Criterion Collection's A Hard Day's Night sees a 4K upgrade. Blue Underground's release of The Toolbox Murders debuts on 4K disc this week. All other 4K discs this week are reissues of some sort. Requiem for a Dream gets a fancy sleeved package Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook release. Akira gets a less elaborate package, 4K/Blu-ray combo release. Deep Red also gets a disc only, swag-less release. Lastly, Tobey Maguires Spider-Man Trilogy gets a standard / non-Digibook release as well. Blu-ray releases- Just like every week, let's get the blu-ray counterparts posted first. Only one this week, from Universal, Last Night in Soho. Also from Universal, The Addams Family 2 (animated) gets a blu-ray only release. And, TV's Annie Live! comes to physical release. The next Vestron Video release comes via LionsGate, Candyman 3: Day of the Dead. From Warner Archive Collection, Edge of Darkness (1943) and Song of the Thin Man. Criterion's blu-ray release this week is a documentary type film titled Time. From Arrow, Red Angel and Shock are on track to be released on Tuesday, don't be surprised by last minute changes though. Powerhouse Films / Indicator Series releases for January are this week and include The Blockhouse, The Brute, Girl Stroke Boy and Hoffman. Anime highlights include Assault Lily BOUQUET - The Complete Season, Grenadier: The Beautiful Warrior, Taisho Baseball Girls (Season 1) and Tower of God. Honorable Mention: ClassicFlix Restorations delivers The Little Rascals: Volume Four this week. Thus far they have done a good job on this series. Notable announcements from last week: Anyone that bought Jack Frost 2 (myself included) a few weeks back be aware there will be a replacement disc in the works soon, stay tuned for more info. The copy you have is fine, but apparently an unedited 16:9 full stereo mix was unearthed and will be coming our way. Some Like It Hot 4K gets pushed back to February 8th. Additional Paramount catalog titles for the next couple months are Spontaneous, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles, 200 Cigarettes and Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. There is word that Disney will be preparing a 4K disc release for Tombstone towards the 4th quarter 2022, but that's just a rumor. I'm still hoping to see Heat in the next few months, on a BD100 disc please. There is also word that the original Candyman is getting a 4K disc later this year. Saved the best news for last. Paramount Home Video is releasing The Godfather Trilogy on 4K disc. Read the news story here for more details. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Trilogy Dated and Detailed for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray March 22ndFrancis Ford Coppola will make you a deal you can't refuse... As the trailer above indicates, the festivities of this 50th Anniversary celebration kicks off with The Godfather returning to theaters for a limited engagement in Dolby Vision screens exclusively at AMC theaters across the country on February 25th, 2022. Click HERE for more info about showtimes. Leave the Blu-ray, take the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Celebrating 50 years of the Corleone family on the silver screen, Paramount Pictures is bringing The Godfather Trilogy to 4K ultra HD Blu-ray on March 22 in a Standard Trilogy release and Limited Collector's Edition. The set will of course include The Godfather, The Godfather Part II and the recently re-edited and cumbersomely retitled Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. From the press release, it does not look like the original Theatrical Cut of The Godfather Part III is making it to the format. We've asked for clarification on that point and will update if that's any different. The Godfather Trilogy - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray The Godfather Trilogy Collector's Edition - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray We expect each film to be presented in full 4K with Dolby Vision HDR, the 5.1 audio tracks of previous releases, but as the press release now indicates, we'll also get the original Mono tracks for The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. In addition to legacy bonus features, a full slate of new extra materials will be coming exclusively to this set. So far we haven't seen any info about any kind of retailer exclusive but we'll keep you posted if that changes. [UPDATE 1/14/22]Alrighty, after a lot of back and forths and scouring the interwebs for final details to this confusing release announcement - here's EVERYTHING we now know will be included with BOTH the standard 4K and Limited Edition 4K collections coming March 22nd. First: Both sets are going to be 5-Disc sets. There was some confusion when Zavvi dropped their listing of a 9-Disc set, but that appears to be a UK/EU exclusive release that includes the same 5 4K UHD discs we'll get here in the states with an additional 4 standard Blu-rays of the films. - Each film will get Dolby Vision/HDR10 grading. - Previously available 5.1 TrueHD audio + Newly restored Mono tracks for The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2 - We'll also get all THREE cuts of The Godfather Part III - how that breaks out is ONE disc for Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone and then another disc for The Godfather Part III Theatrical Cut and The Godfather Part III Director's Cut from 1991. How that all breaks down is ONE Disc for The Godfather, ONE Disc for The Godfather Part II, TWO Discs for all three of the different cuts of The Godfather Part III with one final disc to cover all of the legacy bonus features that are listed in the press release below. Now that very expensive Limited Edition is the same five discs as the standard 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set, but with a coffee table book and three art prints. Personally, I wish they offered the chronological television version of The Godfather Legacy featuring The Godfather and The Godfather Part II edited together as one long movie experience as a bonus. It's a pretty cool and very unique presentation of both films together. I've only ever seen it once on AMC and wish it was more widely available. Maybe next time. If anything new breaks or changes with this release, we'll update our listings and this article ASAP. Both sets are now up for pre-order on Amazon - but don't let that price for the Limited Collector's Edition give you sticker shock. That's pretty darn high so I doubt it's with any kind of sale price included. As always your preorders through our affiliate links are very much appreciated, they go a long way towards keeping our little operation up and running. For more information, we've included the press release below: Paramount Pictures Celebrates the 50th Anniversary ofFrancis Ford Coppola’s Cinematic Masterpiece Experience the Acclaimed Classic in Theatres and on Home Entertainment Platforms HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – January 13, 2022 — In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s Academy Award®-winning* masterwork The Godfather, Paramount Pictures announced today that the film will have a limited theatrical release in Dolby Vision beginning February 25, 2022 exclusively in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres in the U.S., as well as in international territories around the world. All three films in the epic trilogy have been meticulously restored under the direction of Coppola and will be made available on 4K Ultra HD for the first time ever on March 22, 2022. “I am very proud of The Godfather, which certainly defined the first third of my creative life,” said Francis Ford Coppola. “With this 50th anniversary tribute, I’m especially proud Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is included, as it captures Mario and my original vision in definitively concluding our epic trilogy. It’s also gratifying to celebrate this milestone with Paramount alongside the wonderful fans who’ve loved it for decades, younger generations who still find it relevant today, and those who will discover it for the first time.” Coppola’s masterful film adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel chronicles the rise and fall of the Corleone family and the film trilogy is rightfully viewed as one of the greatest in cinematic history. In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the first film’s original release on March 24, 1972, Paramount and Coppola’s production company American Zoetrope undertook a painstaking restoration of all three films over the course of three years. Every effort was made to create the finest possible presentation for today’s audiences who can watch the films using technology that has advanced dramatically since 2007 when the last restoration was completed by eminent film historian and preservationist Robert Harris. Using that work as a blueprint, the team spent thousands of hours to ensure that every frame was evaluated to create the most pristine presentation while remaining true to the original look and feel of the films. The monumental effort included the following: Over 300 cartons of film were scrutinized to find the best possible resolution for every frame of all three films. Over 4,000 hours were spent repairing film stains, tears, and other anomalies in the negatives. Over 1,000 hours were spent on rigorous color correction to ensure the high dynamic range tools were respectful of the original vision of Coppola and cinematographer Gordon Willis. In addition to the 5.1 audio approved by Walter Murch in 2007, the original mono tracks on The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II have been restored. All work was overseen by Coppola. “We felt privileged to restore these films and a little in awe every day we worked on them,” said Andrea Kalas, senior vice president, Paramount Archives. “We were able to witness first-hand how the brilliant cinematography, score, production design, costume design, editing, performances, and, of course, screenwriting and direction became famously more than the sum of their parts. It was our commitment to honor all of the filmmakers’ exceptional work.” Newly restored and remastered in Dolby Vision, all three films in the landmark trilogy will be released together with HDR-10 on 4K Ultra HD Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray™ for the first time ever. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set will include The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, and Coppola’s recently re-edited version of the final film, Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. The disc set includes legacy commentaries by Coppola, as well as access to Digital copies of The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II and Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. In addition to the widely available 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set, a 4K Ultra HD Limited Collector’s Edition will also be released in deluxe packaging and includes a hardcover coffee table book featuring stunning photographs, as well as portrait art prints on archival paper. Both 4K Ultra HD sets include new bonus content including an introduction to The Godfather by Coppola, a featurette about the preservation process, photos by acclaimed photographer Steve Schapiro, home movie footage, and comparisons of the new restoration to earlier versions of the films. A full list of new and legacy bonus content follows: NEW BONUS CONTENT: · Introduction to The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola · Full Circle: Preserving The Godfather—Paramount Pictures archivists detail the incredible restoration process with archival footage showing the evolution of the film through various home entertainment incarnations as picture and audio technologies make quantum leaps over the decades. · Capturing the Corleones: Through the Lens of Photographer Steve Schapiro— In this reflective and frank discussion, special photographer Steve Schapiro shares his unique perspective and cherished memories as a witness to the making of this seminal film. New Year, New You, New 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays - January 2022 EditionWe're barely into the new year and new 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays are hitting store shelves! Normally studios and boutique labels start to take a little bit of a break in the new year. They've spent all of October, November, and December crushing the market with major new releases and fan favorites - often straining the supply chain and their quality-control teams. The SOP in the past was to treat January as a bit of a dump month to take a break, maybe drop a couple of nuggets but nothing too exciting. 2022 seems to be playing the game a bit differently. Not only are boutique labels throwing some great hits but the majors have a few big new releases and favorites lined up. While one of the big anticipated releases of the month is already a dud, that doesn't mean the rest of January is doomed. At least we hope not! The supply chain issues that were such a headache for collectors (and us to get reviews done on time) don't seem to be a problem anymore. Hopefully, it stays that way and we don't see such dramatic scheduling changes for releases like we did the last few months.
