Sony Details 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk' for Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray[teaser]Ang Lee's war drama is heading to Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray in February.[/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Sony is preparing 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk' for Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray/Blu-ray 3D on February 14. Two-time Academy Award® winner Ang Lee brings his extraordinary vision to Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, based on the widely-acclaimed, bestselling novel. The film is told from the point of view of 19-year-old private Billy Lynn (newcomer Joe Alwyn) who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, the film reveals what really happened to the squad - contrasting the realities of the war with America's perceptions. The film also stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Garrett Hedlund, with Vin Diesel, and Steve Martin. The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video and a DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack. Meanwhile, the Ultra HD Blu-ray will feature 2160p video at 60 frames per second (FPS) and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. In addition, the Ultra HD Blu-ray will also include a Blu-ray 3D disc. CyberLink PowerDVD Software Receives Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Playback Certification[teaser]The popular PC Blu-ray player software will soon add Ultra HD support.[/teaser] CyberLink has announced that its PowerDVD media player software has received certification from the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) for the playback of Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs. This now makes PowerDVD the first and currently only software player to pass the BD-ROM 4.0 PC Application Software License process. "With more than 300 million copies sold, PowerDVD is the definitive standard for media players, providing customers with the ultimate in home entertainment for the last 15 years" said Dr. Jau Huang, CEO of CyberLink. "Today's Ultra HD Blu-ray certification means we can once again bring our customers the very latest in video and audio technology, ensuring they can enjoy the ultimate 4K experience." With the updated software, PowerDVD will soon be able to play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs through supported PCs and displays. The Ultra HD Blu-ray format is capable of supporting content with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, an expanded color range, HDR (high dynamic range), high-frame rates (up to 60fps), and the latest object-based immersive sound formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. An exact launch date for PowerDVD Ultra HD Blu-ray support has not been announced yet, but versions of the software with Ultra HD Blu-ray playback are expected to be available early this year. CES 2017: P&F USA Announces New Philips Branded Ultra HD Blu-ray Player with Dolby Vision Support[teaser]The company's newest Ultra HD Blu-ray player has been revealed.[/teaser] P&F USA has announced its latest Philips branded Ultra HD Blu-ray player model. The upcoming BDP7502 Ultra HD Blu-ray player will offer Dolby Vision HDR support through a software update scheduled for later this year. "HDR is a significant advancement in picture technology that delivers tangible improvements in image quality, but Dolby Vision goes further and transforms an HDR picture into something that is truly stunning," said Karl Bearnarth, executive vice president, sales and marketing, P&F USA, Inc., the exclusive North American license partner for Philips consumer televisions and home video products. "Dolby Vision is not just greater dynamic range and wider color gamut; it is also smarter pixels that deliver the best possible viewing experience for consumers." The BDP7502 is set to include Ultra HD Blu-ray disc playback with Dolby Vision (via future software update), along with integrated HEVC and VP9 decoders for playing Netflix and YouTube 4K content, 4K upscaling for non-4K sources, and support for Dolby Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio. CES 2017: Sony Announces UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player[teaser]A new consumer model Ultra HD Blu-ray player has been detailed.[/teaser] Sony has announced its first Ultra HD Blu-ray player designed for the consumer market. The UBP-X800 now joins the company's previously announced ES Series UBP-X1000E Ultra HD Blu-ray player designed for custom installation. "With this new lineup of products, consumers – especially home theater enthusiasts – have the opportunity to create a truly immersive audio and video experience in their home," said Mike Fasulo, President and COO of Sony Electronics. "With Sony's expertise throughout the entire process, from the studio to the living room, Sony Electronics is uniquely positioned to provide customers with the best possible listening and viewing experience. Just as some of our sound products are tuned by some of the best audio engineers in the business, select video and home theater products, like the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player, are developed with collaboration from our colleagues at Sony Pictures." CES 2017: Panasonic Details New Ultra HD Blu-ray Players[teaser]Three new Ultra HD Blu-ray players have been revealed.[/teaser] Panasonic has announced three additions to its Ultra HD Blu-ray player lineup. The new models include the DMP-UB400, UB310 and UB300. The players all feature a new processor developed by the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory (PHL) Blu-ray R&D facility. Likewise, the units are capable of using Panasonic's multi-tap process to interpolate the decoded 4K (4:2:0) signals of Ultra HD Blu-ray content to 4K (4:4:4). In addition, the devices include a 4K Direct Chroma Up-scaling function to deliver 4K-quality pictures from 2K content. Finally, the new players offer 4K VOD support and high resolution audio playback as well.
