Brief flub leads to an official clarification.
Today, Nintendo UK accidently posted some misinformation about the official adapter for using GameCube controllers on the Wii U. The misinformation in question described the adapter as though it could be used with a wealth of Wii U software. In a case of serious wishful thinking, several outlets reported this flub, and a result, Nintendo clarified the 'Super Smash Bros.' exclusive nature of the adapter.(Check out the 3DS version review here.)
From Nintendo,
The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically - it is not compatible with any other Wii U software. The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion.
That means, as was previously considered to be the case, that the adapter is solely designed to be used with 'Super Smash Bros.' It is official limited to that function despite the release of a new GameCube/smash controller, and a bundle which includes, the game, the controller and the controller adapter for $99.99.
You can find the latest info on 'Super Smash Bros.' linked from our Video Game Release Schedule.
