Taking visualizers to the next level, man.
Harmonix today announced a fairly vague but also fairly exciting commitment to Samsung's upcoming Gear VR device, which is being developed with help from the Oculus Rift team. When it releases later this year, Harmonix is putting out what they're calling, simply, 'Harmonix Music VR.' Here's the description:
"Harmonix Music VR” transports you to a fully immersive, music-driven dreamscape allowing you to experience your tunes like never before. It uses Harmonix’s proprietary Music Analysis Engine to generate a song-specific, high-resolution event sequence that drives the reactive elements in your virtual world. Sit back and relax, taking in the vibrant, musically responsive environment, or explore for even more audio visualizations set to your own tracks."
It's safe to say the experimental phase of VR development will be going for some time. Harmonix is most known for inventing 'Guitar Hero' and following that up with 'Rock Band.' Recently, the developer announced the smaller 'A City Sleeps,' a side-scrolling rhythmic shooter, and they're also working on the Kinect-powered 'Fantasia: Music Evolved' for Xbox One.
Studio CEO Steve Janiak has been pushing his company forward with enthusiasm ever since going independent again back in 2010.
"Harmonix has always been interested in creating fundamentally new ways for people to interact with music,” he said. "There’s an incredible amount of potential for this with virtual reality, and ‘Harmonix Music VR’ is just one way we can deliver on these types of innovative experiences. We can’t wait to hear what people think about this new way to experience the music they love."
