Hype machine remains in standby.
Everyone pretty much figured that Nintendo's subdued showing at E3 was the result of holding back spoilers for the NX, their still mysterious next-gen console, and it seems like the future might be closer for Nintendo than we think. A source for business site Digitimes is reporting that they've already started sending emissaries to their big manufacturing partners to prep them for production starting in October, with mass production set to go around May or June next year. Which means, yep, right around E3 2016. We're not looking at small numbers here, either, with over 20 million intended for production so far.
If true, then we're looking at the rose-colored twilight days for the poor WiiU. Despite a much stronger performance this year and last, mostly thanks to 'Smash Bros', 'Mario Kart', and 'Splatoon', nobody can deny it's pretty much JUST Nintendo's first party keeping that thing afloat by sheer will, and that's unfortunately not enough to bolster a system that had a hard time of things from minute one. It's still unclear if Nintendo intends to keep the systems going side by side, or if the NX represents a clean slate. Regardless, it's pretty clear, even despite a few major gems still on their way, that Nintendo's gaze has already started to wander.
We'll always have Inkopolis.
