Aged 45.
Manabu Daishima, a Square Enix Graphics Designer best known for the field graphics in 'Chrono Trigger' and the map and background design in 'Final Fantasy XII' passed away on July 30th in a diving accident, he was just 45 years old. He was diving with two other people when he lost consciousness four meters below the surface, he was found by the others and pulled up, though he had already passed away by that point.
Though it's likely that many haven't heard of Daishima, it cannot be understated just how influential and important his work has been for JRPGs as a whole. 'Chrono Trigger' remains aesthetically distinct to this day, and a large part of that is owed to him. While 'FFXII' is often divisive, it has an immediately terrific look thanks to his work on the game. His influence can be seen in so many JRPGs in the 90s and 2000s, and his work undoubtedly resonates with thousands of people today.
He will be sorely missed.
