3DS version gets a new exclusive Smash Run mode.
Once again, a major Wii U release from Nintendo is in need of more development time. Nintendo has announced that the earliest that fans can expect the Wii U version of 'Super Smash Bros.' is this winter. Meanwhile, the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros.' is still on track for a summer release.
In addition to the new launch windows, Nintendo has also shared a number of details about the 3DS Super Smash Bros.' The 3DS version is set to run at a "silky-smooth" 60 frames per second, even with the 3D mode turned on.
The 3DS version will receive an exclusive Smash Run mode. "In this mode, four players have five minutes to enter a dungeon and explore the surroundings, fight enemies and obtain power-ups to enhance their fighters. Once the five minutes are up, all four fighters enter a battle arena using their newly equipped items and power-ups. Enemies encountered in the Smash Run mode are from a wide range of game series. Multiple Nintendo 3DS systems and games are required for multiplayer modes."
Like the Wii U version, the 3DS version will have online play, and when playing a random opponent online, the players have a choice between the For Fun or For Glory modes. In For Glory, there are no platforms, elevated area or items, and this is intended for the most locked down competition. For Fun is more traditionally featured.
Nintendo has reiterated that the stages will be different between the two versions with the 3DS stages being inspired more by handheld games. Also, "Boss characters, such as the Yellow Devil in Dr. Wily’s Base, will make appearances in some stages. When bosses appear, fighters will have to battle the boss, as well as one another. The boss can even be used in strategic ways to damage other fighters."
"Almost all the stages in both versions of the game will have a “Final Destination form,” an alternate form of each stage that is inspired by the relatively simple layout of the much-loved Final Destination stage."
With the large disparity in release dates, 3DS players will be able to pursue a conderable edge in the new fighting game ahead of its Wii U release.
