The first day-and-date 3D movie is now available now on cable, iTunes, Amazon, videogame consoles and elsewhere.
Same day VOD is a contentious issue, and one that has movie theaters up in arms. One of the things those theaters had going for them, at least initially, was 3D. 'Piranha 3DD' changes that – it's the first 3D movie to be made available in this fashion.
The movie, which came out in theaters last Friday, is currently available through Amazon, Xbox Live, PSN, iTunes and Google Play. You can rent the movie for 48 hours at a price of $6.99 for SD and HD. 3D will cost you $7.99 and is only available on certain platforms – we're presuming that includes the PS3 as well as straight through your cable provider.
While this will certainly cut down on the box office take for 'Pirahna 3DD,' this is one of those movies that seems like it would make most of its money off of sales and rentals, so it might actually end up being a good move for the studio.
