Aldo Lado’s Debut Feature 'Short Night of Glass Dolls' Arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in April 2025Celluloid Dreams is bringing Aldo Lado’s 1971 film, Short Night of Glass Dolls to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray + Blu-ray on April 29, 2025. For the first time in stunning 4K ultra-high resolution, this 4-disc 4K UHD and Blu-ray Collector’s Edition features a brand new, fully restored 4K transfer of the movie from the original camera negatives, as well as a 35mm Grindhouse version of the movie. It comes in a high-quality, side-loaded slipcase that contains a disc case with reversible cover sleeve featuring the English and the original Italian title of the movie, as well as a 64-page booklet. Short Night of Glass Dolls - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray From the fringes of the giallo genre, writer and director Aldo Lado (WHO SAW HER DIE?, NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS) delivers a debut movie that pushes the boundaries of convention with “an ending that is one of the best, truly shocking giallo finales ever put on film.” (Collider) American foreign correspondent Gregory Moore is on his final assignment in Prague before transitioning to London. He plans to bring his beautiful Czech girlfriend Myra with him, freeing her from the shackles of oppressive Iron Curtain politics. But their plans are suddenly derailed when Myra vanishes without a trace. His investigation into her disappearance makes him realize that decadence, superstition, and hunger for power run deep in the City of a Hundred Spires. And then his own body turns up in a park… With no sign of life or rigor mortis, doctors prepare to perform an autopsy to discover the cause of his mysterious and symptomless death. What they don’t know is that in his mind, Greg is frantic. Silently screaming. “I am alive!” Newly restored and presented in 4K ultra-high resolution for the first time, “Short Night of Glass Dolls” is “easily one of the most intelligent and stylish gialli” (The Celluloid Highway). The film will surprise you with its remarkable narrative, distinctive photography, and stellar cast that includes Jean Sorel (A LIZARD IN A WOMAN’S SKIN, THE SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH), Barbara Bach (THE BLACK BELLY OF THE TARANTULA, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME), Ingrid Thulin (THE SILENCE, WILD STRAWBERRIES) and Mario Adorf (THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS?). Celluloid Dreams is proud to present this newly scanned version, restored in 4K from the original camera negative, along with countless extras, in a high-quality, side-loaded slipcase that also contains a 64-page booklet. Feeling The Arrow Video Disc Love - February 2025 4K UHD and Blu-ray ReleasesArrow has just revealed their February 2025 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases. The titles in this wave included: A Certain Killer/A Killer's Key - Arrow Limited Edition, Alice, Sweet Alice - Arrow Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Cruising - Arrow Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 - Arrow Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (UK only, Blu-ray also available), The Last Stop in Yuma County - Arrow UK Limited Edition (UK only), and Lifeforce - Arrow UK Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (UK only). A Certain Killer/A Killer's Key - Arrow Limited Edition Anticipating the cool aesthetic of Seijun Suzuki’s Branded to Kill and based on a crime novel by Shinji Fujiwara, the author of the original material for the same year’s A Colt is My Passport, A Certain Killer and A Killer’s Key are similarly stylish contemporary hitman thrillers directed by Daiei’s top director of jidai-geki, Kazuo Mori (The Tale of Zatoichi Continues) and starring the studio’s top actor Raiz? Ichikawa (Shinobi: Band of Assassins, Sleepy Eyes of Death). In A Certain Killer, Shiozaki’s low-profile existence as a chef at a local sushi restaurant serves as a front for his true job as a professional assassin whose modus operandi is poisoned needles. He’s approached by Maeda, a low-ranking member of a local yakuza group, to take out a rival gang boss. But the sudden arrival into his life of a spirited young woman, Keiko (Yumiko Nogawa, Gate of Flesh), has dramatic ramifications on his relationship with his new employer. Ichikawa’s lone wolf assassin is back in A Killer’s Key, this time masquerading as a traditional dance instructor named Nitta who is called in to avert a potential financial scandal that threatens to engulf a powerful yakuza group with ties to powerful figures in the political establishment. Co-scripted by the director Yasuz? Masumura (Giants and Toys, Blind Beast) and featuring masterful scope cinematography with an expressionistic eye for colour by one of Japan’s most esteemed cinematographers, Kazuo Miyagawa (Rashomon, Ugetsu), these Japanese crime drama essentials are presented for the very first time to the English-language home video market. LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray presentation of both films Original uncompressed Japanese mono audio for both films Optional newly translated English subtitles Brand new audio commentary for both films by critic and Asian cinema expert Tony Rayns The Definite Murderer, a brand new 30-minute introduction to the films by Japanese film scholar Mark Roberts Original theatrical trailers for both films Image gallery Reversible sleeve featuring newly commissioned artwork for both films by Tony Stella Illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the films by Jasper Sharp and Earl Jackson Alice, Sweet Alice - Arrow Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray A young Brooke Shields meets an untimely end in this religious-themed proto slasher par excellence from director Alfred Sole. On the day of her first communion, young Karen (Brooke Shields) is savagely murdered by an unknown assailant in a yellow rain mac and creepy translucent mask. But the nightmare is far from over – as the knife-wielding maniac strikes again and again, Karen’s bereaved parents are forced to confront the possibility that Karen’s wayward sister Alice might be the one behind the mask. Bearing influences from the likes of Hitchcock, the then-booming Italian giallo film and more specifically, Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now, Alice, Sweet Alice is an absolutely essential – if often overlooked – entry in the canon of 1970s American horror. 4K ULTRA HD LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS Brand new 4K restoration by Arrow Films from the original camera negative 4K (2160p) Ultra HD presentations of three versions via seamless branching: Communion (original), Alice, Sweet Alice (theatrical) and Holy Terror (re-release) Original lossless mono audio Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing Brand new audio commentary with Richard Harland Smith Archival audio commentary with co-writer/director Alfred Sole and editor M. New York is caught in the grip of a sadistic serial killer who is preying on the patrons of the city’s underground gay scene. Young rookie cop Steve Burns (Pacino) is tasked with infiltrating the S&M subculture to try and lure the killer out of the shadows... but as he immerses himself deeper and deeper into the underworld, Steve risks losing his own identity in the process. Taking the premise and title from reporter Gerald Walker’s novel, Cruising was the subject of great controversy at the time of its release and remains a challenging and remarkable movie to this day, with Pacino’s haunted lead performance as its magnetic centrepiece. Though the hulking Leatherface left an indelible mark upon the cinematic landscape, it wouldn’t be until 1986 that the buzz came back… in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2! Relocating the cannibalistic Sawyers to a cavernous labyrinth beneath an amusement park, Hooper’s deliciously demented sequel sees local DJ Stretch running afoul of them when she gets mixed up in the brutal slaying of two youngsters. Meanwhile, Lieutenant “Lefty” Enright is hell-bent on avenging the murder of his nephew Franklin, who perished in the original massacre. Whichever way you skin it, Leatherface’s second cinematic outing is an uncompromisingly delirious vision from one of the masters of horror. 2-DISC LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS Limited edition packaging featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Ilan Sheady and Dare Creative Booklet featuring new writing by Johnny Mains, Anna Bogutskaya, Guy Adams and Neil Mitchell Double-sided fold-out poster Texas Battle Land theme park postcard Chili cook-off recipe card Three double-sided collector’s postcards DISC 1 (4K ULTRA HD BLU-RAY) - THE FILM 4K restoration from the original negative 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) Original lossless stereo 2.0 audio Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing Commentary with director Tobe Hooper Commentary with stars Bill Moseley, Caroline Williams and special effects legend Tom Savini Commentary with cinematographer Richard Kooris, production designer Cary White, script supervisor Laura Kooris and property master Michael Sullivan DISC 2 (BLU-RAY) - BONUS FEATURES Are We Not Both the Living Dead?, new visual essay by Scout Tafoya You’ve Got Good Taste: Cannibal Camp and Perverse Parody, new visual essay by Miranda Corcoran Stretch Lives!, interview with Caroline Williams Serving Tom, interview with makeup effects artist Gabe Bartalos Texas Blood Bath, interview with makeup effects artist Barton Mixon Remember the Alamo, interview with actor Kirk Sisco Die Yuppie Scum, interview with actor Barry Kinyon Extended interviews with Tobe Hooper and co-producer Cynthia Hargrave, from Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films It Runs in the Family, (plus outtakes!) on the film’s genesis, making and enduring appeal House of Pain, interview with makeup effects artists Mixon, Bartalos, Gino Crognale and John Vulich Yuppie Meat, interview with actors Chris Douridas and Barry Kinyon Cutting Moments, interview with editor Alain Jakubowicz Behind the Mask and Cutting Moments with Bob Elmore, two interviews with Leatherface’s performer Horror’s Hallowed Grounds, featurette exploring the film’s locations Still Feelin’ the Buzz, interview with horror expert Stephen Thrower Behind-the-scenes Alternate opening credits Deleted scenes Trailers and TV spots Still gallery The Last Stop in Yuma County - Arrow UK Limited Edition NEVER BRING A KNIFE SALESMAN TO A GUNFIGHT Blending elements of the western and neo-noir, The Last Stop in Yuma County is a loving and expertly crafted homage to the spirit of 1970s American crime thrillers with a modern twist, winning the prize for Best Film at the Sitges International Film Festival. A travelling knife salesman impatiently awaits the arrival of a fuel truck in an isolated roadside diner in rural Arizona. His attempt to wile away the hours with a crossword puzzle and a cup of coffee is interrupted by the arrival of Travis and Beau, two bank robbers fleeing from a heist. Realising they’ve been recognised, the thieves intimidate the diner’s staff and clientele into silence just as more oblivious patrons begin to trickle in. As the tension mounts and pressure spirals, the salesman is caught between protecting the safety of the other customers and his own survival, and will make a decision that will change his life forever. Featuring gripping performances by a cast loaded with genre favourites, including Jim Cummings (The Beta Test), Richard Brake (Barbarian), Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), Jocelin Donahue (The House of the Devil) and Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes), The Last Stop in Yuma County is a thrilling exploration of the difficult choices and fragile alliances that arise in desperate situations. Count Your Blessings Because David Fincher's 'Se7en' Is Coming to 4K UHD & SteelBook January 7th 2025.After an elaborate box set edition popped up for sale early last year (and was quickly canceled), David Fincher's terrifying serial killer thriller Se7en finally sees its 1080p sins absolved for a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release from Warner Bros. Fincher did an exhaustive restoration of the film and it will see limited IMAX engagements in the U.S., Canada, and abroad starting January 3rd! At long last, a film we've long waited for to see a good and proper 4K upgrade is coming to disc. David Fincher's Se7en has been in the works for some time. After Zavvi and other European retailers offered up an elaborate swag-filled literal Box Set edition of the film for pre-order, it was unceremoniously canceled. Don't know if someone jumped the gun or what happened there, but that big box set is not happening now. However, the good news is that Fincher himself personally oversaw the restoration and HDR grading of the film (which is pretty normal for him). So while we miss out on that box set, we finally get the film in 4K HDR and packed with loads of extra features with a Stylish SteelBook offering as well. The press release we received from Warner Bros didn't indicate HDR grade or audio, but from the back art image of the SteelBook on Amazon, it looks to be HDR10 with DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. It's All Physical Media Love with The Criterion Collection's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Slate for February 2025After already announcing an impressive January 2025 slate to begin the new year, The Criterion Collection is following up with one hell of a February. For the shortest and coldest month of the year, fans can look forward to some 4K upgrades of old favorites, more Goddard on Blu-ray, and a couple of brand new 4K UHD & Blu-ray additions. The Criterion Collection may not always make a whole lot of sense for what titles arrive in their collections, but I have to hand it to them, they're certainly pulling out some strangely romantic titles this month. We're getting everything from Early Del Toro to Godard to Paul Thomas Anderson all in one slate. Punch Drunk Love - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray 2002 • 95 minutes • Color • Dolby Atmos • 2.35:1 aspect ratio Chaos lurks in every corner of this giddily off-kilter foray into romantic comedy by Paul Thomas Anderson. Struggling to cope with his erratic temper, novelty-toilet-plunger salesman Barry Egan (Adam Sandler, demonstrating remarkable versatility in his first dramatic role) spends his days collecting frequent-flier-mile coupons and dodging the insults of his seven sisters. The promise of a new life emerges when Barry inadvertently attracts the affection of a mysterious woman named Lena (Emily Watson), but their budding relationship is threatened when he falls prey to the swindling operator of a phone sex line and her deranged boss (played with maniacal brio by Philip Seymour Hoffman). Fueled by the careening momentum of a baroque-futurist score by Jon Brion, the Cannes-award-winning Punch-Drunk Love channels the spirit of classic Hollywood and the whimsy of Jacques Tati into an idiosyncratic ode to the delirium of new romance. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Paul Thomas Anderson, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Blossoms & Blood, a short 2002 piece by Anderson featuring Adam Sandler and Emily Watson, along with music by Jon Brion Interview with Brion Program featuring behind-the-scenes footage of a recording session for the film’s soundtrack Conversation between curators Michael Connor and Lia Gangitano about the art of Jeremy Blake, used in the film Additional artwork by Blake Cannes Film Festival press conference from 2002 NBC News interview from 2000 with David Phillips, the “pudding guy” Twelve Scopitones Deleted scenes Mattress Man commercial Trailers English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by filmmaker, author, and artist Miranda July 4K UHD + BLU-RAY COMBO EDITION SRP: $49.95PREBOOK: 12/31/24STREET: 2/4/25CAT. Kindly antiques dealer Jesús Gris (Federico Luppi) happens upon an ancient golden device in the shape of a scarab, and soon finds himself the possessor and victim of its sinister, addictive powers, as well as the target of a mysterious American named Angel (a delightfully crude and deranged Ron Perlman). Featuring marvelous makeup effects and the haunting imagery for which del Toro has become world-renowned, Cronos is a dark, visually rich, and emotionally captivating fantasy. In a post-Chernobyl world where culture has been lost, William Shakespeare Jr. V (played by theater director Peter Sellars) attempts to reconstruct his ancestor’s play, abetted by a cast that includes Molly Ringwald, Burgess Meredith, and Godard himself as a crazed avant savant. Through a dense layering of sounds, images, and ideas about everything from language to the economics of filmmaking to the very meaning of art in a ruined world, Godard fashions a puckish and profound metacinematic riddle to be endlessly analyzed, argued over, and savored. Set Off On The 4K Adventure Of A Lifetime with Ron Howard's 'Willow' on 4K UHD SteelBook December 10thJust in time for the holidays, we can enjoy Ron Howard and George Lucas' family-friendly fantasy adventure film Willow finally arrives on 4K UHD Blu-ray with deluxe SteelBook packaging. The George Lucas / Ron Howard team-up Willow might have been something of a box office misfire at release, but the film has grown into a fan-favorite fantasy adventure classic. Now we can enjoy the exploits of Warwick Davis' Willow and his pal Madmartigan and the beautiful Sorsha in full 2160p with HDR. The press release wasn't specific about HDR grade, remember Disney is punching Dolby Vision onto their 4K discs on a case-by-case basis - so this one might not have made the cut. We'll see if any clarification comes out on that. But we can at least expect HDR10 on the BD66 disc with DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. We also don't have a breakdown of extra features yet, but it's a safe bet those will be on the included Blu-ray. Hopefully, if this sells well, maybe we'll get the abandoned series' first season on disc too. What's Up With That? Sony Celebrates 35 Years of Nothing with Seinfeld on 4K UHD & Blu-ray December 17th - but there's a catch!Who would have imagined a show about nothing featuring some of the worst characters imaginable lasting ten seasons let alone remaining the cultural phenomenon it is today? Concluding their incredible 100th Anniversary of Columbia Pictures, they're tipping their hat to the 35th Anniversary of Seinfeld with 4K UHD and Blu-ray disc releases. So this news got brewing early this morning when we received a ton of messages from fans concerning the 4K listing on Amazon. Before I even had my first of my daily dozen cups of Columbia's best export, I was fielding questions about whether I knew this or knew that, yadda, yadda, blah, blah-blah, blah. Now with incredible grace, Sony has finally given us complete details for their 4K UHD and Blu-ray sets dated to drop December 17th. With great relief, I am pleased to report that Seinfeld: The Complete Series - 4K UHD will be delivered pressed on 24 discs presented in its original 1.33:1 broadcast aspect ratio (THANK YOU SANTA!) with HDR10, and DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio! Seinfeld: The Complete Series - 4K UHD Now here's where things get stranger... When it comes to the 1080p counterpart, Seinfeld: The Complete Series - Blu-ray will be presented in the horribly cropped 1.78:1 versions we've seen on streaming spread over 24 discs and offering DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. Seinfeld: The Complete Series - Blu-ray Why is it the 4K gets the proper aspect ratio and the Blu-ray gets the ugly cropped version? What's up with that? Truthfully I don't know beyond the speculation that the 1080p masters were ready to go and they wouldn't have to reauthor anything in the lower resolution after the new 4K scans. The other eye line I can see is that Sony views 4K UHD as the niche preservationist format that it is and is catering to please the people willing to payout about $100 more for the set than standard Blu-ray. Mind you that's just a guess. Beyond aspect ratio differences, both sets look to have the same extra features - which weren't detailed in the PR so I have to assume they're the same archival materials assembled for the DVDs. So, grab your fork, knife, and favorite candy bar and get those pre-orders in!
