'Shenmue' might continue, but only if the third installment goes well.

One of the surprises that came out of E3 2015 was 'Shenmue' creator Yu Suzuki's appearance at Sony's conference to announce the Kickstarter for the long-awaited 'Shenmue 3.' Suzuki then launched an AMA on Reddit to follow up with fans and share some more details about the sequel.

After the Kickstarter campaign blew past its goal of $2 million in less than a day, supporters could start to wonder what kind of features 'Shenmue 3' would include if it kept receiving additional funding throughout the month-long funding period. And though the Kickstarter page details a couple of specific stretch goals (like subtitles for various languages), Suzuki gave a couple of big-picture goals that he has past the original $2 million.

"[I]f we reach the $5 mil mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality," Suzuki's post reads. "At $10 million, it will truly have the features of an open world."

Suzuki didn't go into whether this $5 million dollar goal was the "Character Perspective System" mentioned on the Kickstarter page or something else entirely. Fortunately for the developers, hitting $5 million seems like a distinct possibility at this point. The campaign has 26 days to raise another $1.5 million, after having raised more than $3 million in less than a week.

Suzuki also noted that the possibility of 'Shenmue 4' depends entirely on the reaction that 'Shenmue 3' receives. The original idea for the 'Shenmue' story, according to Suzuki, was to have the narrative told over the course of four or five games.
