May 2024 is going to be a tough month for 4K collectors. Not because there's nothing coming out, quite the opposite actually. Now that Hollywood has gotten more flicks in theaters after the respective Writers/Actors strikes, that means we have a lot of new titles and a ton of back catalog and deep cult classics coming to 2160p!
April 2024 was something of an interesting release month in that it started out pretty light, had some good big favorites to get excited for, but then saved the biggest dump of new releases and back catalog 4K titles for the very end of the month. On one hand it helped to spread out the finances early on, but that meant saving everything for the very last day of the month. May 2024 is hitting the gas hard early and isn't really letting up one week to the next - so let's dive in and see what we need to save up for:
It can't rain all the time! The first week of the month kicks things off pretty hard and heavy. We see one notable KLSC 4K reschedule hit the frame, another Coppola re-edit, a scream factory double feature event, and then one of the biggest and most influential comic book films of the 1990s all join the 4K format along with three very exciting concert discs.
Not to slow things down, the second week of May sees a lovely mix of new, deep catalog, and recent favorites all getting the 4K treatment. For one disc in particular, it's a shame Warner Bros. didn't see fit to include a certain suggestive popcorn bucket! Add in one of the craziest cult classics and one of the finest westerns ever made, and we've got to start clearing some shelf space!
So this frame is rather interesting. Not only are we getting some exciting new and catalog titles but we're also getting something a little different. This frame will see the first wave of Paramount's multi-format 4K + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital releases priced at the bargain rate of about $10.99. While that price is appealing, these are packed in standard DVD-sized cases, so we'll see how well they sell to the collectors market or if they help tip some SD buyers into 4K collecting.
Unlike April, the last frame of May is a bit of a breather. There's plenty of great stuff coming, but a large chunk of it are the standard editions of Severin's more elaborate Website exclusives and a few other smaller trinkets. KLSC in particular has some solid titles coming our way too.
And that's pretty much everything that's hitting the domestic market for 4K UHD Blu-rays in May. Obviously, some of these release dates could change and more stuff could slip in there without much fanfare or warning. If anything changes we'll update our listings and this article toot sweet. Happy Collecting!
