New engine update offers more than just polished graphics.

The latest free update for 'The Vanishing of Ethan Carter' is now live on Steam, granting everyone with a copy of the game access to the 'Redux' edition, which utilizes Unreal Engine 4, rather than the original Unreal Engine 3.

When the narrative-driven exploration game first entered into production, UE4 was not entirely finished, so the game progressed using UE3. Now that the engine is out in the open, developer The Astronauts remade the game "from scratch" to allow the game to run on new and future consoles, the developer said.

With the new engine, the game is able to run smoother on higher-end machines. The 'Redux' also introduces a new save system that saves players' progress more often, and it eliminates the endgame backtracking that some players experienced if they reached the end of the game and realized that they had missed something on the other side of the map.

'The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux' demands a bit more hardware than its UE3 predecessor, requiring 64-bit Windows and 6 GB of RAM. If your machine doesn't quite stack up, you can still play the original version with no problem.

If you already have 'The Vanishing of Ethan Carter,' you should receive the 'Redux' version the next time you update. On Steam, the 'Redux' shows up as an entirely different library entry.
