Finally.
As just about anyone who owned a PS3 can tell you, the PS4 has needed a dedicated PS4 remote since day one. This is especially true since the PS4 now has its own MKV playing media player. Up until now, users have had to use their controllers, or else CEC-HDMI solutions. The few "PS4 remotes" have been keyboard emulators, unfortunate devices that couldn't even power the system on. (The recent Logitech Harmony hub functionality is also limited.)
But now, on sites like Amazon and Gamestop, a new, proper PS4 remote has appeared. The PDP Universal Media Remote for the PS4 is officially licensed by Sony, uses Bluetooth and IR (IR for secondary devices like a TV or AVR), and includes the full array of PS4 specific controls and media controls.
The PDP Universal Media Remote for PlayStation 4 is available to preorder now with a release date of October 31st. It's priced at $29.99 (Preorder here.)
From Amazon,
The officially licensed Universal Media Remote for PlayStation 4 gives you complete control of all PS4 media playback via Bluetooth. Easily control up to 4 devices—PS4, Set Top Box, TV, and Audio Receiver—and enjoy direct access to the PS4 Home and Power buttons without a controller. Enjoy a convenient and hassle-free way to navigate and control your PlayStation 4 system from your couch.
Hopefully, the release of this remote heralds a new state of remote compatibility and usability for the PS4. We've reached out to Sony and PDP for comment, and will update this story when more information is available.
