And now to wait for content.

Sony has announced that PS4 owners can expect to receive System Update 4.00, and among other important updates, such as a UI refresh and folder organization, comes HDR.

PS4 Quick Menu

As a reminder, the PS4 Pro is coming, and with comes 4K and HDR, (see here), but every PS4, including the new "Slim" PS4 (see here) and the original 2013 model and its sub variants, will get HDR. So that means that tomorrow, with System Update 4.00, my launch PS4 will be able to display HDR on my 4K HDR display.

But what's the catch? Well, right now, it's not clear what HDR content will be made available to the original PS4. It's not even evident right now as to when to expect the first piece of HDR content, be that game or streaming media related. (Or even if Netflix will offer HDR support on the non-Pro PS4.)

PS4 Folders

HDR aside, the 4.00 update will bring it with it several usability improvements, including a Quick Menu with Music control, and a LAN-based data transfer feature for use when changing systems. Some of the updates in 4.00 are specific to the unreleased PS4 Pro. For example, 1080p streaming for Remote Play and Share Play will now be supported on the PS4 Pro.
