Kicking the ball down the road.
American soccer star Clint Dempsey will join globally beloved superstar Lionel Messi for this year's 'FIFA 15' cover, in the U.S. only. It's not unheard of, regionally-customized covers, and this is a big year for both players coming off the 2014 World Cup. The fact that the U.S. even made it out of round play and into the final tournament, if only for a game, makes Demsey the leader of a very succesful team. Of course, Messi managed to take Argentina to the final game, but lost to the Germans.
You may have taken notice of a peculiar detai lin the cover. Dempsey is wearing his Xbox-sponsored, Seattle Sounders shirt, not his World Cup team garb. He just so happens to make a wardrobe change for Playstation versions of the game.
'FIFA 15' is due out for every console under the sun, save the Wii U, this September. Even in 'FIFA' terms, it should be a big year for EA. Football/soccer reached a fever pitch in the notoriously ambivalent American culture.
