The hero Gotham deserves, but on the one it gets for a few months.
Telltale Games held a panel at the SXSW festival in Austin last night which focused on giving the world the first solid details on what to expect out of Telltale's 'Batman' since the trailer dropped this past December.
Unfortunately, those expecting some actual footage will be left wanting, but we all know that's par for the course for Telltale, who'll basically drop trailers 20 minutes before the series premieres. But, we now know the following:
--The series will be five episodes, with the first premiering sometime this summer. No firm release date yet, but I'd bet any amount of money we'll get that solidified for us at E3.
--The game won't be going the shick brithouse look of the 'Arkham' titles, but hewing closer to the comics. Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and Neal Adams were namedropped. Like 'Arkham Knight', however, the game will be aiming for an M-rating. Telltale's 'The Wolf Among Us' was mentioned as being similar in tone.
--And now, for no good reason, here's a picture of the most recent draft of the game's script:
--The player focus will be 100% on Batman/Bruce Wayne, narratively. The extended family--Robin, Nightwing, etc--will be sitting this one out. A few well-known ancillary characters--Alfred, Vicki Vale, Jim Gordon, Renee Montoya--will be around. Telltale's keeping the rogue's gallery under wraps until closer to launch.
--We'll let Telltale explain the branching stuff themselves: "Each night, Bruce Wayne chooses to change Gotham for the better. [The game will] explore what the consequences are of the player’s actions when decisions made as Bruce have a critical impact on his nightly crusade as Batman, and vice versa. Certain key situations will give the player the decision to approach a scene as Bruce or Batman, with consequences for both sides. Certain characters will have a deeply personal relationship with Bruce in his private life, and decisions made as Bruce or Batman will affect their paths towards corruption or redemption."
--You'll actually have the ability to choose between staying Bruce or switch to Batman on a regular basis. Telltale CEO Kevin bruner even stated "We expect people to try to play a Batman game with as little Batman as possible."
Put it all together, and it's sounding like Telltale's brewing up something amazing and different for this one. They better, with Rocksteady hanging up the cape and cowl, somebody needs to carry the torch.
