"This story is about hate."
In the recently revealed sequel to Naughty Dog's hit 'The Last of Us,' Ellie will take over as the primary playable character, the developer announced.
During a panel at PlayStation Experience 2016, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann confirmed that the player's perspective will shift from Joel, the primary playable character in the original game, to Ellie. The sequel will take place several years after the end of the first game, when Ellie is 19 years old.
In addition to shifting character perspectives, Druckmann also contrasted the two titles in terms of theme. While the first game, he said, focuses on themes of love and family, the sequel will focus on hate.
Though the first 'Last of Us' game was largely Joel's story, players were able to see the world from Ellie's perspective in a small portion of the original game and in the "Left Behind" story DLC.
You can watch the whole panel, featuring Druckmann, Ellie actor Ashley Johnson, and Joel actor Troy Baker, below.
