The PS4's success continues.
Sony has announced today that over 35.9 million PS4's have been sold as of January 3rd, 2016, having sold over 5.7 million units during the 2015 holiday season.
Sony has also announced that over 35 million retail and digital PS4 games were sold during the holiday season as well, noting that games and consoles were "sold through", meaning that this number represents units sold to consumers, not just shipped to retailers. Additionally, 60% more users became PS Plus subscribers by the end of 2015 compared to the same period in 2014. Sony is currently looking to hit 38.8 million PS4 sales by March 31st, 2015, which seems easily doable, considering the system sold 2.5-3 million consoles per quarter last fiscal year.
It's been interesting to see Sony completely turn its fortunes around after last generation, making a series of smart decisions that have really given the console more success than I think most anticipated. Whereas the Xbox 360 was the clear frontrunner in terms of sales then, the PS4 is easily outpacing both the Xbox One and Wii U. Microsoft is certainly looking to close the gap, but as it stands, it seems likely that, if developers can only work on one console, they'll likely head for PS4.
