No really, amiibos are flying off the shelves.
Nintendo has shared some interesting numbers, and the narrative is clear, the Wii U is on the up and up. Not only was December the best month for the Wii U in its two year history (that's total combined hardware and software sales in a one month period), but yearend numbers for 'Mario Kart 8,' 'Super Smash Bros.' for the Wii U, and amiibos are eye-popping. Some 3DS titles are even better.
Observe:
'Mario Kart 8' - 1.7 million physical and digital copies in 2014
'Super Smash Bros.' (Wii U) - 1.3 million physical and digital copies in 2014
amiibos - "nearly twice the sales of 'Super Smash Bros.' for the Wii U"
'Super Smash Bros.' (3DS) - more than 2 million combined physical and digital units
'Pokémon Omega Ruby' and 'Pokémon Alpha Sapphire' - combined sales are over 2.6 million physical and digital units
And then there are the other 3DS titles. In total, 16 Nintendo 3DS titles sold at least 250,000 units.
Naturally, the topper here is the amiibo sales. Nintendo seems to just be getting started, and the massive sales have motivated the Big N to incorporate them into more games, not the least of which is 'Mario Party 10.'
Then again, these numbers might not seem all that impressive, especially with regards to 'Mario Kart 8' and 'Super Smash Bros.' for the Wii U. That is, until you factor in that these numbers only apply to sales in the US.
Next, we'll see if Nintendo can keep the success going with the New 3DS XL, and less obviously, if the 2015 will be a grand year for the Wii U.
