The streaming platform now supports HDR10 playback.
VUDU has announced the addition of HDR10 streaming support for select 4K Ultra HD titles on select displays and media devices. Previously, the service only offered HDR playback using the Dolby Vision format.
HDR10 is an open standard High Dynamic Range content and playback solution for 4K TVs and Ultra HD titles. The process uses expanded brightness to improve contrast between dark and light aspects of an image, bringing out deeper black levels and more realistic details in specular highlights -- like the sun reflecting off of an ocean -- in specially graded HDR10 material. Likewise, the format is typically bundled with a Wide Color Gamut (WCG), offering a greater range of colors than those found in traditional SDR content.
At launch, there are 36 UHD movies available with HDR10 through VUDU, including titles like Wonder Woman, Man of Steel, Kong: Skull Island, and Mad Max: Fury Road. Any previously purchased 4K UHD movies in a user's VUDU library that qualify for HDR10 will now be viewable in the format. In addition to HDR10, VUDU continues to support a growing collection of Dolby Vision HDR titles as well. When playing a VUDU HDR title, users will automatically get the format that is compatible with their 4K HDR TV or streaming device for the best picture.
Here's a full rundown of currently supported TVs and media players that offer VUDU HDR10 playback per VUDU:
- Google Chromecast Ultra
- LG 2016 & 2017 UHD, Super UHD and OLED TVs
- Nvidia Shield TV
- Roku Streaming Stick+, Premiere+, Ultra

- Roku 4K TVs with HDR support (e.g. TCL P & C-Series)
- VIZIO 2016 & 2017 Smartcast P & M-Series 4K TVs
