The Ultra HD set-top box can now play VUDU content in 4K HDR.
VUDU has announced an update for its Apple TV 4K app, expanding playback support to include 4K HDR rentals and purchases. In order to enjoy the new feature, Apple TV 4K users will need VUDU app version 1.1.0 and must set their default playback quality to UHD.
VUDU offers a growing collection of 4K UHD titles in HDR10 and Dolby Vision high dynamic range formats, including select content from studios like Warner Bros., Lionsgate, Universal, Sony, Paramount, and Disney. On that note, VUDU is now the first Apple TV 4K app to offer Disney movies in 4K HDR, including some Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars films. VUDU 4K HDR titles typically cost around $15 to $25 to purchase. With that said, while several VUDU 4K HDR titles also include Dolby Atmos immersive audio tracks, the Apple TV 4K does not currently provide support for that format.
The Apple TV 4K utilizes the A10X Fusion chip and offers 4K playback capabilities at up to 60 frames per second with support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision content on compatible apps, including iTunes. Likewise, customers can even receive automatic 4K HDR upgrades of HD titles in their existing iTunes library when they become available free of charge. In addition, the device includes 4K scaling for HD sources, Siri voice search, iCloud support for media sharing, standard AirPlay capabilities, and the ability to serve as a smart home hub for HomeKit accessories with remote access and automated control.
Apple TV 4K models are now available in 32GB ($179) and 64GB ($199) versions.
