Since they're in agreement with the ITU on the subject, it looks like we'll have a nice easy time with this naming convention. Now they just have to pass that message on to the general public.
While it may not seem like a big deal, having the CEA and ITU agree on the naming convention for 3,840 x 2,160 televisions is really going to help the technology move forward. An industry standard name means a unified industry standard message, which means slightly less confusion from the kinds of folks that would otherwise be terribly out of their depths with new technology. You know, the people that don't read blogs like this one.
Now that the whole naming thing is out of the way, companies can start showing off their new UHD sets to the general public and hopefully educate people as to the benefits of the new technology.
Even if you're not the biggest fan of UHD, the adoption of the name means one other very good thing – we won't have to keep explaining to people that 4K sets don't actually have 4,000 horizontal pixels. One less complicated tech explanation out of the way!
