The Japanese electronics giant has detailed it latest array of Ultra HD TVs and media options.
At its CES press conference yesterday, Sony unveiled its full 2014 lineup of 4K displays and announced new details about its 4K content delivery options, including expanded support for its Video Unlimited 4K Download Service and new partnerships with Netflix.
"It may be cliche to say content is King, but when talking about 4K Ultra HD TV, it reigns over consumer decision-making," said Mike Lucas, senior vice president of Sony Electronics' Home Entertainment & Sound Division. "Sony is a company of firsts and we continue to lead the way with 4K from lens to living room. Couple our key industry partnerships with our group-wide collaboration and innovative technologies, and consumers will see Sony continues to lead, advance and enrich the 4K entertainment experience."
Since launching in September 2013, Sony's Video Unlimited Service is now home to a growing library of more than 140 4K films and TV shows, including popular titles like 'Breaking Bad' and 'Elysium.' In 2014, even more new releases will hit the service, brining hit movies like 'American Hustle' and 'Captain Philips' to Sony 4K TVs. Likewise, Sony's new sets will support the HEVC codec, allowing for 4K streaming at 60 fps from other services like Netflix.
In addition, the company is expanding its Ultra HD TV lineup to include three new series of LED displays with a total of nine models. The XBR X950B is the company's reference line, and will be available in 85 and 65-inch models. The high-end sets feature Sony's X-tended Dynamic Range PRO driven by direct LED arrays. Meanwhile, the mid-range XBR X900B will be available in 55, 65, and 79-inch models. These displays also incorporate Sony's X-tended Dynamic Range technology but use Edge LED arrays. Finally, Sony is also releasing the XBR X850B entry level series of 4K TVs. This line will be available in 49, 55, 65, and 70-inch sizes and does not feature the X-tended Dynamic Range tech.
Exact pricing has not been detailed yet, but the new 4K XBR displays are expected to go on sale this spring. All of Sony's 4K offerings are now on display in the company's booth at CES in Las Vegas.
