The display technology offers increased brightness and improved power saving.
Japan Display Inc. has begun mass production of its 5-inch 1080p TFT LCD "WhiteMagic" panels. The proprietary display technology promises superior luminance and reduced power consumption.
WhiteMagic displays differentiate themselves from traditional LCD screens by adding a white subpixel to the standard RGB panel. This leads to improved brightness levels. In addition, the screens use a unique algorithm to determine optimum processing for the LCD backlight. This results in reduced power consumption without sacrificing image quality. With these benefits in mind, the technology offers two modes: a power saving option that maintains luminance, and an even brighter outdoor mode that increases luminance by about 1.5 times while still using the same power as a traditional, dimmer RGB panel.
Previous WhiteMagic displays have been produced in lower resolutions and have been integrated into low-end smartphones, but this new 5-inch 1080p screen has the potential for high end applications and mobile devices. Companies and specific phones using the new screen have not been announced yet, but Sony has used WhiteMagic technology for some of its smartphones in the past. Japan Display will demo the panels at its booth during the FPD International in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan on October 23 to 25.
