Unlike most media viewers, you'll be able to see through the image and not lose track of your surroundings.
Let's set the scene. You're on a long flight across the country and you get the urge to watch a 3D movie. Well simply get out your personal media viewer and you can kick back and relax. But wait, what happens when the stewardess comes to pass out drinks? You can't possibly count on the person next to you - you're in a war for the armrest after all.
The ST1080 solves this problem by giving you vision of what's going on around you. It's the first ever see-through head mounted display on the market for consumer use. That means you can watch a movie while not losing touch with the outside world. It's not clear whether this can be turned on or off though - there are times where shutting yourself off completely is exactly what you wan to do.
SiliconMicroDisplay says that its new ST1080 is not only higher resolution than competitors - each eye sees 1080p - but also that the price will be much more affordable than others on the market. They haven't announced a price yet, but launch is expected next month.
