LED backlit sets had a huge jump at the end of this year, eclipsing fluorescent backlighting for the first time.
Practically from the beginning, home theater buffs saw LED backlit TVs as the only real choice when buying a new set. They provide better backlighting, allow for darker blacks and, as an added bonus, are more energy efficient.
In the fourth quarter of 2011, the mass consumer base caught up. While LED backlit sets only made up 22% of purchases in the third quarter of the year, they came in at 54%. That’s over double the market share, and during the holidays too, when sales are at their highest.
That’s not to say that customers went into stores looking for an LED backlit set. Plenty were planning on a standard CCFL set but ended up changing their minds. In fact, 81% of people who went in with a CCFL in mind ended up going with LED backlighting instead.
