Titles from Sony and Lionsgate will be available through Redbox on their retail street dates.
Redbox has announced a renewed distribution deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. As part of the agreement, Sony Blu-ray and DVD titles will be available for rental at Redbox kiosks on the same day that they hit retailers for purchase.
"We're pleased to renew our partnership with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment," said Galen Smith, CEO of Redbox. "The partnership ensures that consumers will have day-and-date access to SPHE's robust content slate, while also driving stronger financial performance for both SPHE and Redbox."
In addition to Sony, Redbox has also renewed a similar agreement with Lionsgate, ensuring that the studio's titles will be available to rent through kiosks on their retail street dates as well. Likewise, the company also signed deals with Warner Bros. and Fox to rent new releases seven days after they launch at retail stores. Meanwhile, Universal remains the only major studio to maintain a 28 day window between retail launch and Redbox rental availability.
"Redbox is a longstanding and valued partner," said Lionsgate President of Home Entertainment Ron Schwartz. "We are pleased to extend our relationship with them and remain committed to delivering a broad portfolio of premium content across an ever-expanding array of linear and digital platforms."
Beyond new studio deals, Redbox recently announced plans to launch 1,500 net new rental kiosks throughout 2017. More than 300 new kiosks have been placed in the first quarter so far, and once the expansion is complete, the company is set to have more than 41,500 kiosks nationwide. Current Redbox DVD rentals start at $1.50 per night and Blu-ray rentals start at $2 per night.
