Will stream PS3 titles to the PS4, PS Vita, and PS Vita TV.
Sony has been very coy on detailing its plans for Gaikai, but has already offered the streaming service as the alternative to native PS4 backwards compatibility for the PS4. That coyness has not yet been alleviated, with specifics such as pricing, exact dates, and exact titles remaining vagaries. Nevertheless, recent statements by Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida have revealed some details.
Sony is focused on promoting the PS4 and what it can do at launch, as well as reminding the public that the PS Vita is not going away this year or the next. Still, the subject of Gaikai and its PS3 game streaming functionality was touched on in a roundtable interview at TGS. Specifically, Gakai will offer a selection of PS3 titles in North America in 2014. These titles will be available to play on the PS4, PS Vita, and even PS Vita TV, which does not have announced plans for a western release.
Other PS4 notes from TGS include PS4 voice and gesture control, the lack of HDCP, which will allow for external game capture, DS4 support for PS Vita TV, and the demonstration of a new PlayStation Android and iOS app for second screen use.
