Dolby Volume Sneaks into Set-top Boxes

Formerly found in higher end receivers and amplifiers, Dolby Volume seems to have found its way into Motorola’s new set-top boxes.

Dolby Volume is an increasingly popular option for movie and television viewers. As we reported last week, with the number of loudness changes that the average person goes through while watching TV, let alone a poorly mixed film, it’s no wonder.

The technology that Dolby Volume employs doesn’t just look for the peaks in an audio signal like many other options for volume stability. It identifies the important parts of sound, such as dialogue, and ensures that the volume remains consistent while still preserving the dynamic range.

Motorola announced that they’ll be putting Dolby Volume into their new set top boxes so consumers can have the option right there on their cable box. The new DCX700 and DCX3300 HD set-tops will have Dolby Volume right out of the gate, while the already available DCX3400 HD-DVR and DCX3200 HD can be updated through the cable networks.
