The company will increase production of flexible OLED screens.

LG has announced a new 1.05 trillion Koeran Won investment in the development of flexible OLED screens. The money will be used to fund a 6th generation production line.

The new OLED production line will be located in the Gumi Plant in Gyeongbuk Province, Korea and is expected to begin mass operations during the first half of 2017. The plant will produce 7,500 input sheets per month using a 6th Generation size substrate sheet of 1,500mm x 1,850mm, and can create more than 200 cuts of a 5.5-inch product from a single substrate. The bendable displays will be geared toward use in mobile, auto, and wearable devices. To achieve flexibility in the panel, the company uses a plastic substrate instead of the glass substrate used in traditional OLED displays.

LG currently uses conventional OLED panels in its large-screen television lineup and previously mass produced the world’s first plastic substrate-based 6-inch flexible OLED smartphone panel in October 2013. With its reaffirmed commitment to the technology, LG hopes to become the flexible OLED market leader.
