Netflix customers will be able to stream movies from the DreamWorks library, but HBO subscribers lose out.
We've seen a bit of a Netflix/HBO rivalry in the last few years. Netflix wants HBO's shows for streaming and HBO won't allow it. Both companies bid on the new series 'House of Cards' starring Kevin Spacey and Netflix won out. Now Netflix is taking DreamWorks content right out of the hands of HBO.
A new deal between Netflix and DreamWorks gives the streaming service access to not only catalog titles but new theatrical releases starting in 2013. It's an incredibly big deal for both companies - Netflix, of course, for scoring a significant new source of timely content and DreamWorks for taking a bit of a risk eschewing traditional pay TV.
Details haven't been released about the length of this deal, but the price is reported at $30 million a year. That's another big investment for Netflix and yet another reason not to discount the company any time soon.
