A tantalizing new press release from the Walt Disney Company touting sales of their licensed products includes the first official mention of a Blu-ray release for one of their classic animated titles, 'Sleeping Beauty.'
Issued by the company's Consumer Productions division to coincide with this week's International Licensing Expo in New York City, the press release (which can be read in full here) focuses primarily on an extensive new line of licensed products and toys based on top Disney properties.
But embedded far down in the release is a section hyping the "Disney Princess" franchise of 'Sleeping Beauty'-inspired products and direct-to-video spin-offs. Included is the juicy tidbit that, "...the entertainment will continue as 'Sleeping Beauty' is planned for re-release on DVD in 2008 and will be available on Blue Ray [sic] for the first time."
Granted, the mispelling of the format's name doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the veracity of this info, and we should stress that no actual street date, nor any further information beyond the 2008 timeframe is included in the release.
Still, with Blu-ray fans clamoring for the first high-def release of a Disney animated classic, we'll take this official mention in a company press release at face value, and will certainly keep you informed of any more formal announcements from the company's home entertainment division.
In the meantime, we've added a listing for 'Sleeping Beauty' to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule. Stay tuned...
Thanks to Joel for the tip!
