Titles include The Watermelon Woman (Blu-ray), Breathless (4K UHD), After Hours (4K UHD and Blu-ray), One False Move (4K UHD and Blu-ray) and The Ranown Westerns: Five Films Directed by Budd Boetticher (4K UHD).
The month's Blu-ray-only title is the romantic comedy The Watermelon Woman by Cheryl Dunye arriving on July 11.
The wry, incisive debut feature by Cheryl Dunye gave cinema something bracingly new and groundbreaking: a vibrant representation of Black lesbian identity by a Black lesbian filmmaker. Dunye stars as Cheryl, a video-store clerk and aspiring director whose interest in forgotten Black actresses leads her to investigate an obscure 1930s performer known as the Watermelon Woman, whose story proves to have surprising resonances with Cheryl’s own life as she navigates a new relationship with a white girlfriend (Guinevere Turner). Balancing breezy romantic comedy with a serious inquiry into the history of Black and queer women in Hollywood, The Watermelon Woman slyly rewrites long-standing constructions of race and sexuality on-screen, introducing an important voice in American cinema.

On the same date comes Martin Scorsese's 1985 dark comedy After Hours also available on Blu-ray.
Desperate to escape his mind-numbing routine, uptown Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) ventures downtown for a hookup with a mystery woman (Rosanna Arquette). So begins the wildest night of his life, as bizarre occurrences—involving underground-art punks, a distressed waitress, a crazed Mister Softee truck driver, and a bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweight—pile up with anxiety-inducing relentlessness and thwart his attempts to get home. With this Kafkaesque cult classic, Martin Scorsese—abetted by Michael Ballhaus’s kinetic cinematography and scene-stealing supporting turns by Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O’Hara, and John Heard—directed a darkly comic tale of mistaken identity, turning the desolate night world of 1980s SoHo into a bohemian wonderland of surreal menace.

After Hours - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (Criterion)
Arriving on July 18 is a 4K UHD upgrade of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless.
There was before Breathless, and there was after Breathless. Jean-Luc Godard burst onto the film scene in 1960 with this jazzy, free-form, and sexy homage to the American film genres that inspired him as a writer for Cahiers du cinéma. With its lack of polish, surplus of attitude, anything-goes crime narrative, and effervescent young stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, Breathless helped launch the French New Wave and ensured that cinema would never be the same.

Also on July 18 is The Ranown Westerns: Five Films Directed by Budd Boetticher on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
The five briskly entertaining, vividly performed westerns made by director Budd Boetticher and strapping star Randolph Scott in the second half of the 1950s transcend their B-movie origins to become rich, unexpectedly profound explorations of loyalty, greed, honor, and revenge. Often grouped under the name Ranown (after producer Harry Joe Brown and Scott’s production company) and colorfully scripted by Burt Kennedy and Charles Lang, these films seem to unfold in a world unto themselves, staking a claim between traditional westerns and the subversive genre revisionism of the 1960s—and representing the crowning achievement of the underappreciated auteur Boetticher.
THE TALL T
Based on a story by Elmore Leonard, this collaboration between director Budd Boetticher, actor Randolph Scott, and screenwriter Burt Kennedy is a model of elegantly economical storytelling charged with psychological tension. Here, Scott is the easygoing rancher who, along with the newlywed daughter (Maureen O’Sullivan) of a wealthy mining baron, must use his wits to stay alive when he is taken hostage by a band of ruthless stagecoach robbers. He is memorably matched by Richard Boone’s dangerously charming, nearly sympathetic villain in a performance that exemplifies the fine moral shading that distinguishes the Ranown westerns.
1957 • 78 minutes • Color • Monaural • 1.85:1 aspect ratio
DECISION AT SUNDOWN
Randolph Scott boldly subverts his upstanding image in this stark, often startlingly bleak tale of revenge and a man’s misguided quest for redemption. He plays the mysterious stranger who, consumed by hatred for the man he blames for his wife’s suicide, rides into the corrupt town of Sundown hell-bent on vengeance. There, both he and the townspeople face a reckoning that forces them to confront disturbing truths about themselves. All but annihilating the myth of the righteous western hero, Decision at Sundown edges the Ranown films into increasingly dark, despairing territory.
1957 • 77 minutes • Color • Monaural • 1.85:1 aspect ratio
BUCHANAN RIDES ALONE
Welcome to Agry Town, a corrupt border outpost presided over by a pair of rival brothers whose bottomless greed corrupts everything in their orbit. Into this moral cesspool rides drifter Tom Buchanan (Randolph Scott), who soon finds himself railroaded for murder and, alongside a vengeful young Mexican vaquero, forced to take a stand for justice. The noir-tinged narrative—replete with twists, double crosses, and the kind of richly drawn villains who are hallmarks of the Ranown westerns—moves with entertaining economy toward a memorably ironic climax.
1958 • 79 minutes • Color • Monaural • 1.85:1 aspect ratio
RIDE LONESOME
Mysterious motivations drive taciturn bounty hunter Ben Brigade (Randolph Scott) to capture a wanted murderer—but his quest is complicated when he is accosted by a pair of outlaws who have their own inscrutable reasons for riding along. Masterfully scripted by Burt Kennedy, who weaves a complex web of ambiguous loyalties and motives, and featuring supporting turns by genre icons James Coburn (in his film debut) and Lee Van Cleef, the first of the Ranown westerns to be shot in CinemaScope makes striking use of the enlarged frame—with a final shot that stands as perhaps the single most unforgettable image in the series.
1959 • 73 minutes • Color • Monaural • 2.35:1 aspect ratio
COMANCHE STATION
The last collaboration between Budd Boetticher and Randolph Scott brings the Ranown westerns full circle, reexamining many of the films’ key themes and tropes: greed, loyalty, hidden motivations, and the fine moral line that separates heroes from villains. Scott stars as the enigmatic Jefferson Cody, who rescues a woman kidnapped by Comanches for reasons that may have nothing to do with the bounty offered for her return. But before he can bring her to safety, he’ll have to contend with the dangers of the Comanche warpath and a trio of bounty hunters who have designs on the reward.

And finally on July 25 is Carl Franklin's One False Move on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as well as Blu-ray.
A small-town police chief (Bill Paxton) concealing an explosive secret. A pair of ruthless drug dealers (coscreenwriter Billy Bob Thornton and Michael Beach) who leave a bloody trail in their wake as they make their way from Los Angeles to Arkansas. And an enigmatic woman (Cynda Williams) caught in the middle. The way these desperate lives converge becomes a masterclass in slow-burn tension thanks to the nuanced direction of Carl Franklin, whose haunting debut feature travels a crooked road across America’s most fraught divisions—urban and rural, Black and white—while imbuing noir conventions with a wrenching emotional depth.

Turbine Medien prepares 4K UHD Mediabook collectors for a wild journey into the Interzone with David Cronenberg's hypnotic adaptation of William S. Burroughs' iconic novel Naked Lunch with a 4-disc set packed with five hours of bonus features! All three Limited Edition Mediabooks are up for per-order and ship starting April 28th
One of the most bizarre and surreal films in Cronenberg's already bizarre and surreal catalog of films, Naked Lunch is steeped in hyptnotic imagery held by incredible performacnes and an amazing Howard Shore score. Burroughs has always been a polarizing figure and so too was this film. Part adaptation of Burroughs' novel, his actual life, and other short stories, Peter Weller stars as William Lee who after killing his wife, grabs his typewriter and flees to the North African Interzone. It's a hell of a trip and essential viewing for any Cronenberg fan. It's also damned hard to peg a specific genre. Is it comedy? Drama? Horror? Science Fiction? All of the above? You'll just have to huff your own tank of bug killer and find out for yourself!
As we knew Arrow Video was already issuing their own releases of Naked Lunch, Turbine Medien is preparing to unleash their own unique Limited Edition Mediabook Releases. Each edition offers the film in 4k Ultra HD with Dolby Vision HDR with a transfer approved by Cronenberg, a remastered Blu-ray, as well as two additional discs with over 5-hours of bonus features on top of a 48-page essay book (in German)!
Here are your options:

At long last, James Cameron's 1989 aquatic science fiction adventure The Abyss: Special Edition is set to make a splashy return to physical media on July 4th, 2023.
With new generations of home video enthusiasts on social media accounts like YouTube and TicTok discovering retro home video formats, The Abyss will come home with a massive 14-Disc Laserdisc set remastered from a brand new 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision Transfer in vivid 420i with an immersive Dolby Atmos track presented in Dolby Digital Stereo.

James Cameron’s
Coming to 4K Ultra SD Laserdisc July 4th, 2023!
Burbank, CA (April 1, 2023)
James Cameron’s 1989 special effects science fiction extravaganza The Abyss: Special Edition makes a glorious return to physical media with a brand new deluxe 14-Disc 4K Ultra SD Laserdisc set on July 4th, 2023. The last time The Abyss was seen on physical media was over twenty years ago on DVD.
After an extensive scanning, restoration, and color-grading process, The Abyss is finally ready to make its glorious return to disc-based media on the biggest and best format available. With the re-release of Avatar and Titanic to theaters and the colossal box-office haul of Avatar: The Way of Water - fans have eagerly anticipated the return of James Cameron’s most complicated and strenuous production.
Instead of more modern formats like Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD, it was decided to resurrect the long-dormant Laserdisc format for the ultimate home video release of this fan-favorite science fiction epic. After surveying several thrift stores and reaching out to A/V enthusiasts, we shockingly discovered that there were more people with Laserdisc players than there were currently utilizing higher resolution formats like Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. More people enjoy the 4:3 Letterboxed visual experience on their 4K televisions - and this set is designed for them.
To those who may be disappointed by this news, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray editions will be available someday. The new masters are ready and have been approved, discs have been replicated, packaged, boxed up, paletted, and are ready to ship to retailers. We just don’t intend to release them at this time. To bring The Abyss: Special Edition back to physical media, we really wanted to make a splash by offering a unique viewing opportunity that only a select few will actually be able to enjoy.
The Laserdiscs will be housed in a glorious box set. Spread between seven beautiful gatefold sleeves featuring original artwork, newly commissioned artwork, and stills from the film. Also included will be reproduction posters, reproduction lobby cards, and a copy of the film’s third draft screenplay.
Transfer: NEW 4K Restoration and Dolby Vision HDR grading presented in 420i SDR NTSC For maximum picture quality
Each disc side offers approximately 10 minutes of the film.
Aspect Ratio: 4:3 Widescreen Letterbox replicating the 2.35:1 theatrical experience

Happy April Fools Everyone - we hope you had a good laugh with this as we endure the ongoing frustrations of not having a genuine quality release of The Abyss or True Lies for almost two decades now. We've been hearing for ages now that these films are coming, but it's starting to become the "James Cameron Who Cried Restoration" these days. Maybe this will be like last year with our fake Criterion Collection announcement of Roadhouse in 4K and we'll actually get these great flicks on Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray?
The third film in the Rocky franchise spinoff marking the directorial debut of star Michael B. Jordan is headed for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray on May 23.

The press release doesn't specify if the 4K Blu-ray will include Dolby Vision or if either Blu-ray edition will have Dolby Atmos, but it does reveal the bonus features:
Preorders are live for the 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray and a 3-Film Collection on Blu-ray will also apparently be available on the same day. Here is the full press release:

Jason Statham's Chev Chelios is back in a Crank Best Buy exclusive 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray + Blu-ray + SteelBook on May 23.
It appears the Best Buy exclusive Crank 4K UHD Blu-ray + Blu-ray + SteelBook is just a collectible packaging upgrade. This has been the case with Lionsgate reissues so don't expect anything new in the overall package. For those who haven't picked it up, the SteelBook is damned slick looking and at that price point it's a bargain for stylish artwork.
There are a thousand ways to raise your adrenaline, and today hit man Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) will need every one! He has one hour to settle the score and say goodbye to his girl and go out with a little style. The only question is, will he stay alive long enough to see it happen.
Here's the bonus features:
As with the previous release, the 4K UHD will also include Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The suggested retail price is $27.99 although it's currently running on sale for $21.99
.
Just in time for the new movie, this set includes Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Transformers: The Last Knight and Bumblebee on 4K UHD Blu-ray as well as Blu-ray. Each film features its own SteelBook packaging with a magnetic slipcase and collectible decal plus digital copies.
Aside from the new SteelBooks, the discs don't seem to be any different than what has previously been released. You still get Shia doing what he did for three movies. You still get those two very rough Mark Wahlberg movies as well as the rather kick-ass soft relaunch Bumblebee. On 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. This one really is for fans who either don't have any of the films on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray or really like the new SteelBook offerings.
Here's what you're getting in the bonus features
