In 1964, when America waged war against itself: in Jessup County in Mississippi, three young civil rights activists disappear without a trace. The FBI suspects that the three were murdered by fanatical supporters of the Ku Klux Clan, but of the corpses are missing any trace. Agents Alan Ward (Willem Dafoe) and Rupert Anderson (Gene Hackman) are entrusted with the investigation of the case, but encounter great resistance in the population, which significantly hinders their investigations. Racism prevails in the rural region where even the sheriff and his men are members of the Ku Klux Klan. The two FBI agents, who often stand in the way of each other with their different working methods, must rush together to clarify the case...
