Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS - 4K UHD Kino Cult #37
Notorious shocker Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS arrives on 4K UHD thanks to Kino Lorber. This controversial exploitation film stars Dyanne Thorne as a sadistic Nazi commandant who oversees torturous experiments in her medical camp. Part grueling horror, part softcore erotica, the film is a cornerstone of cult cinema. The 4K Combo Pack from Kino Lorber’s Kino Kult line provides an outstanding A/V package with new and archival supplements. It’s a diabolically excellent release, For Fans Only.
Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take
“Size is not everything, Commandant.”
Director Don Edmunds’ 1975 Nazisploitation entry Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS is widely considered the height of the subgenre thanks to its iconic lead performance by Dyanne Thorne. Her portrayal of the whip-cracking, bloodthirsty commandant defines the film movement to this day. Like most, I saw this film years ago on bootlegged DVDs and VHS tapes, hoping to satisfy my curiosity. Since then, few exploitation films have produced a villain so memorable.
The story unfolds at Medical Camp 9 where Ilsa oversees experimentation on women prisoners to prove the female sex can withstand greater pain than men. Electrocution, boiling, pressurization, and a host of other tortures are performed on the innocent naked women. Ilsa also tests the men in her camp in a more pleasurable fashion. If these so-called “men” can't satisfy her sexually, she castrates them, turning her into the ultimate dominatrix. Soon, a German-born American is sent to the camp that piques Ilsa’s curiosity. When he discovers that his secret talent can be used to take down Ilsa, he and the others plot their escape.
Performances throughout the feature are fairly wooden. Between the horrible German accents of the officers and the tortured prisoners writhing in pain, it’s all very serviceable. A keen eye will spot several established B-movie actresses in the film. Colleen Brennan (The Boob Tube), Uschi Digard (Supervixens), Jacqueline Giroux (Garage Girls), and Donna Young (The Black Gestapo) all star as various prisoners on the receiving end of Ilsa’s sadistic experiments.
Panned by critics and banned in some countries even to this day, Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS earned a reputation fueling a devoted cult following. While most Nazispolitation films used the “women in prison” motif as a backdrop for their concentration camp horrors, Edmunds chose instead to use Ilsa’s pseudo-science to inject a rational focus. In this way, the scenes of torture and sadistic violence have a purpose above sheer terror. This mad scientist angle becomes even more attractive when it's housed within Ilsa’s perverse determination.
Thankfully, Ilsa did not fade away with the closing credits. Dyanne Thorne’s magnetic performance established her as a cult icon. She would return for three official sequels: Ilsa, Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks, Ilsa, the Wicked Warden, and Ilsa, the Tigress of Siberia, with Thorne reprising the role each time. This icon of female aggression rose above the problematic historical nature of the genre to become a beacon for cult cinema enthusiasts.
Vital Disc Stats: The Blu-ray
Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS arrives on 4K UHD thanks to Kino Lorber and its Kino Kult sub-label. This release is spine #37. In this Combo Pack release, the 4K UHD disc is Region-Free, while the Blu-ray is Region A. Each disc loads the Kino Cult logo before landing on the static Main Menu screen with typical navigation options. Housed in a standard black keepcase, each disc is set in a separate tray. My version arrived with a slipcover sporting the alternate artwork.
Video Review
Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS is presented in HEVC 2160p and AVEC 1080p transfers. Both are available in the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio. The 4K disc for Ilsa supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10. I went with the new Dolby Vision Master for review purposes and wasn’t disappointed in the least. This new 4K restoration offers astonishing clarity and detail. While the upgrade reveals the production’s meager budget, it also highlights Joe Blasco's outstanding makeup effects work, which doesn’t get enough praise. Skin tones and textures also reveal themselves in fine detail, whether it's bodies under duress or the heights of pleasure.
A natural grain field is present throughout, keeping the grind house aesthetic firmly in place. The sheer amount of detail within skin textures and facial features is overwhelming at times. Before the opening sex scene is over, it's clear that this is the best Ilsa has ever looked. My god, you can even see light reflecting in Dyanne’s piercing blue eyes. No DNR or smoothing present. Primaries are strong with reds bright and bold across the SS uniforms and blood effects. Detail is present within dark spaces and shadows, like the grimy quarters of the camp. The black fabric of the SS uniforms reveals textures and details as well. Image stability, depth, and contrast are all solid.
The Blu-ray presentation of the film yields a similar result, with a noticeable uptick in fine detail, color, and clarity compared to previous DVD releases. Comparing the 4K and Blu-ray images, I can see that the Blu-ray transfer is slightly darker overall. This fact doesn't affect black levels or details in shadows. It's a fine HD presentation for sure, and certainly one I could enjoy if I didn't have a 4k setup.
I may sound like a broken record with these reviews, but seeing old, nasty exploitation films getting proper 4k restorations fills my cup to the damn brim. Who would’ve thought that Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS, a grueling Nazispolitaiton shocker, would ever get this kind of treatment?
Audio Review
Ilsa screams with pleasure at your suffering in a clean 2.0 DTS-HD MA track in English. This lossless track is clear, offering a distinct sharpness to the mix. Dialogue is clear and distortion-free, giving audiences an excellent presentation. Effects and scoring remain flat, highlighting the low budget available for the production. During some outdoor scenes, you can hear freeway traffic in the background! Preserving the sound design retains the raw aesthetic for this grindhouse classic, allowing us to enjoy it as it was back in 1975. English SDH subtitles are available.
Special Features
Kino Lorber has assembled new and archival supplements for this release. Spread across both discs, the special features offer plenty for fans to enjoy. Collectors should note that the Dyanne Thorne commentary track is the old track seen on numerous DVD releases. I'd recommend starting with her audio commentary track, then moving on to the other supplements.

Final Thoughts
Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS remains the quintessential entry in the short-lived Nazisploitation subgenre. Thorne’s performance and body of work elevate this run-of-the-mill horror show into something remarkable. The film's ridiculous, perverse violence still shocks and titillates audiences, though its legacy lies firmly in Thorne’s grasp. As a fan of exploitation films, I’m excited that this perverse cult movie is now on my shelf in the best format available. Kino Lorber’s 4K UHD presentation is nothing short of astonishing. The A/V package resurrects the iconic exploitation film and breathes new life into every frame. When paired with the supplemental commentary tracks, the disc becomes an essential grab for collectors.
