Insidious - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook

 A film that was released over 12 years ago, Insidious is a horror movie that created a worldwide phenomenon in horror. It spawned a franchise and movie universe in the horror realm that is still very much alive today and could be said to have reignited those ghastly and terrifying moments of joy for horror. Still after all these years, Insidious is a fun and scary movie with great performances and spooky visuals that can't be unseen. It's held up strong and should continue to do so.

Vital Disc Stats: The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Insidious scares its way to 4K +Blu-ray + Digital in a beautiful, haunting Steelbook via Sony. There are two discs housed inside the Steelbook, which have images from the movie. The artwork on the interior of the case is the drawings from the kid. The outer artwork is the movie poster of the kid. There is an insert for a digital code. 

Insidious comes with a brand new 2160p 4K UHD transfer with HDR/Dolby Vision enhancement. It's been a number of years since the already solid-looking Blu-ray was released, but this new 4K image is a good upgrade in both its video and audio presentations. The color palette in this new picture is richer and bolder, highlighting those darker sequences with amazing black levels. The Dolby Vision/HDR allows for those blue filters and darker scenes to really pop that reveals some of the other reds and earthier colors in their primal states. This is something that the 1080p couldn't do.

The well-lit scenes offer up some great-looking brown and beige interiors of the house that even allows Shaye's light blue sweater to look incredible. But those black levels are inky without any crush or murky shadows. It mixes well with the intense reds throughout and is distinguishable from those stylized blue tints this time around. Skin tones can be a little anemic, but that's due to the color pattern of the film and don't a transfer issue. The detail is sharp and vivid, revealing excellent closeups that show off individual hairs, practical effects and makeup, CGI supernatural abilities, and textures in props and clothing. There is no pixelation or swarms of heavy grain here. There are also zero bits of aliasing, banding, or heavy noise. This is a wonderful-looking upgraded 4K image that should satisfy everyone.

This release comes with a new Dolby Atmos track which suffice to say, is the way this movie should be viewed and heard. Insidious was made for a Dolby Atmos track and lets everyone know right away they are in for an audio treat with some fantastic sound effects that are booming and well-balanced. This new Dolby Atmos track is very immersive in a way that rumbles the walls and haunts those ear canals with those frightening entities that go bump in the night. Creaks in the floors, footsteps, and other ghastly sounds make a big impact on the surround speakers. These bigger horrifying moments along with tits eerie score bring a great low end of bass that has a nice rumble to it which never crosses into rocky territory. The height speakers bring some other-worldly noises and other immersive elements as well. The dynamic range is wide here with this Atmos mix and each sound effect is robust and pitch-perfect. The dialogue is always clean, clear, and easy to follow as well. This is a wonderful upgrade.

There are only 27 minutes worth of bonus materials here, all of which were included in the previous Blu-ray release a number of years ago. There are NO new extras, which is a shame. It would be nice to have a new retrospective interview with some of the cast and crew.

• Horror 101: The Exclusive Seminar (HD, 11 Mins.) - James Wan and Leigh Whannell talk about the horror genre, the tone, and story of the movie, the production, and what makes a scary movie. It's a great bonus feature, but too short.
• On Set with Insidious (HD, 9 Mins.) - Cast and crew interviews along with some on-set footage discussing making the movie are located here.
• Insidious Entities (HD, 7 Mins.) - The demon and supernatural characters are discussed.

Insidious is still a grand and wonderful horror movie. One that changed the horror genre and spawned numerous sequels and a franchise horror universe that has made hundreds of millions. Still, one of the best jump scares is from this film and still haunts the world today. And after revisiting the film, it's safe to say it's still scary and a ton of fun. The new 4K image with Dolby Vision/HDR looks impressive and the new Dolby Atmos audio track is exquisite. There are no new extras, but the same previous features have been imported over here. With a brand new carefully orchestrated Steelbook with new artwork and a Digital Code - this is Highly Recommended!
