Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take

Ranking:

Sometimes in the midst of award season where every movie has to take itself seriously and have layers of meaning behind every piece of dialogue and action - it's nice to have a film that's just plain old fun, silly, and highly entertaining. Especially in these turbulent times, a good old-fashioned action-romantic comedy is just what the world needs to put smiles on everybody's faces. Luckily, The Lost City answers that call with a fantastic cast, a super-funny self-aware premise, some excellent action sequences, and some great physical comedy that mixes elements of Indiana Jones and Romancing The Stone. Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe, and Brad Pitt all make The Lost City an entertaining outing that's full of romance, laughs, action, and old-school Hollywood entertainment. Highly Recommended!

From a story conceived by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, King Of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters), and directed by relatively new filmmaker brothers Adam and Aaron Nee - The Lost City starts out with a bang of action and comedy and never really lets up in its two-hour run time. Most all romantic comedies follow a strict formula that never deviates from its path. The reason the same formula works is usually its stellar A-List cast who comes on screen with a ton of charm, chemistry, and wit. If the performers have those elements, the movie can tell the same story and still feel fresh and funny. This is the case with The Lost City. Tatum, Bullock, Pitt, and Radcliffe are all fantastic to watch on screen and are all very aware of the movie they are making. Their over-the-top lavish performances are what really drive this hilarious movie home with its comedy and even a little bit of heart, soul, and romance.

Bullock plays Loretta Sage, a doctor of archeology who found huge success in writing romance novels that feature her love of archeology, complete with a devastatingly handsome cover model on her books series named Alan (Tatum). This cover model is the character in all her books named Dash and is the stereotypical chiseled man with long-flowing blonde hair, much like Fabio. Does everyone remember him? After a long string of books, Loretta has become bored of writing this material since most of her book signings are of women who just come to see Alan in character take off his shirt and reveal his eight-pack abs. This sets the stage for how unhappy Loretta is in her life, as she's still reeling from the death of her husband and trying to make her publisher happy with new material.

After a botched book signing with her co-star Dash, Loretta is kidnapped by flamboyant billionaire Abigail Fairfax (Radcliffe), who has set his sights on an ancient artifact that Loretta has written about in her romance novels. He believes she's the key to uncovering the location of this priceless jewel on a small remote island far away from her comfort zone. It's here where the action and comedy truly come together were Alan, who thinks he's actually his book character that can fight and save the day, has to hire a former friend and Navy-Seal operative Jack (Pitt) to help rescue Loretta. From here on out, the action sequences, romance, and comedy only grow bigger with each scene as Loretta and Alan try to survive deadly attacks from both nature and henchmen.

The smaller moments between both Bullock and Tatum are tremendous, whether it be a dance sequence that etches out their new fondness for each other that they hadn't seen before, or even a sequence involving leeches. These little moments are what make The Lost City wonderful with its charm. There are a couple of side quest characters that pop in as well, including a cameo from Oscar Nunez (The Office) who steals the show as a small island pilot with a furry friend. The action sequences are played out like a Michael Bay film as well with some serious, over-the-top fights, stunts, and explosions. This goes perfectly with its silly characters as they are forced to deal with terrifying situations. There is never a time when the movie is in over its head. The Lost City knows how to have fun and directors Adam and Aaron Nee, do a great job of conveying that perfect balance of comedy and action.

Bullock is not only one of the most talented actresses to ever grace the big screen, She is also one of the most underrated physical comedy performers. The way she moves around a jungle in high heels and a sequined onesie is downright hilarious in all the best ways possible. And of course, Tatum's comedic schtick in both his line delivery and physical stunts are wonderful. Pitt is just living his best life in this movie as well and serves as a precursor to him standing next to Keanu Reeves as the next big action star over 25 years old. The Lost City is a fantastic ride that is guaranteed to pull smiles and laughs in everyone who watches it.

Video Review

Ranking:

The Lost City comes with an impressive 2160p UHD 4K transfer with Dolby Vision that looks exquisite. This digitally shot feature has an impressive color gamut that is a candy-coated adventure to the eyes.

The color palette has bold primary colors from the many shades of greens in the tropical trees to the different tones of blue in the sky and ocean below. The brown and orange landscapes of mountains and hills look wonderful as well. This all contrasts nicely with Bullock's hilarious purple sequined dress that sparkles in both low-light scenes and bright daytime sequences. Other primary colors on costumes and signage look fantastic. Additionally, the "treasure" that is being sought after shines brightly in those dream sequences. The charcuterie scene displays a rainbow cavalcade of color as well, all of which pops right off screen with the Dolby Vision upgrade. White and black levels are nuanced at all times as well. There are no murky shadows or bleeding in those inky black levels as well. The skin tones are very natural as well.

The detail is extremely sharp and vivid with closeups that reveal individual hairs, facial stubble, pores, and wrinkles in the skin. Excellent textures in the wardrobe look fantastic and props and set designs showcase their imperfections and sheen. Every flowing lock of hair on Brad Pitt's head looks amazing and distinguishable, while the practical makeup effects on every actor look wonderful. Wider shots of the tropical islands and sandy beaches look fantastically detailed with individual grains of sand and water droplets from the ocean coming through nicely. Big CGI effects never look pixelated, soft, or dull. Each big explosion and special effect gives way to the amazing detailed debris and fire that rains down. Lastly, there are no issues with banding, aliasing, or video noise.

Audio Review

Ranking:

This release comes with a glorious Dolby Atmos track that is full of thrills, fun, and energy. The sound effects start right away in the auditorium for the book signing where the natural reverb of the microphones sounds off in the rear speakers and the ambient noises of the crowd sound fantastic as they cheer their favorite author. When the action sequences pick up, the dynamic range extends in a big way with many bullets and vehicles driving by at all sound levels. The low end of bass comes with a hefty rumble without crossing into rocky territory.

Those big explosions and gunfire do pack a punch in a great way. Airplanes and boats also sound fantastic here as well. Each bullet that crosses over has some wonderful directionality to it and flows smoothly from speaker to speaker. The height speakers bring down natural weather, explosions and debris, airplane noises from overhead, and more on a consistent basis. The ambient sounds of wildlife, nature, and other people talking all come through often in the surround speakers. The score always brings that fun, energetic tone to each scene with a good amount of bass, and the dialogue is clean, clear, and easy to follow. There are no audio problems to speak of.
